Mickey Bowen is preparing to continue a proud family tradition at this Saturday’s £100,000 Unibet Summer Plate Chase at Market Rasen, part of the venue’s highly anticipated Summer Plate Ladies Day. The 30-year-old trainer, now leading the family’s Pembrokeshire-based yard after his father Peter Bowen’s retirement, will send out two top-class runners—Statuario and Courtland.
Peter Bowen’s association with this race is iconic, having saddled a record eight winners over the years. Now Mickey, in his first full season as head trainer, is aiming to add a new chapter to that legacy. His contenders are both well-established and in fine form. Statuario, who finished third in the 2023 edition and recently won the Perth Gold Cup, returns stronger than ever. Courtland, the 2023 runner-up, is back with renewed freshness after a long absence.
Mickey fondly recalls early memories of this special race, including Ballycassidy’s win in 2003 and more recent triumphs by Francky Du Berlais. While he acknowledges the legacy left by his father and brothers—James and Sean, both of whom have also won the race as jockeys—he remains focused and relaxed. “There’s no pressure,” he said, “we’re just here to do our best.”
Statuario’s latest victory over a longer distance at Perth confirmed his stamina and ability. Even with the step back in trip, Bowen believes the race’s expected fast pace will play to his strengths. Running off a lower rating this year and with ideal ground conditions, the son of Helmet is considered to have a real chance. Jockey Adam Wedge is set to take the reins, as James and Sean are committed to rides for other stables.
Courtland also returns with strong credentials. After a long layoff due to a minor leg issue, he ran a promising third at Cartmel. With that effort under his belt and a slight weight advantage thanks to Shane Fenelon’s five-pound claim, Bowen is confident the 10-year-old can deliver a strong performance.
Bowen isn’t just focused on the main race. He plans to bring a quality team to Market Rasen across the full day’s card. Among his other entries are Broughshane—recently acquired from Jonjo and AJ O’Neill—for the extended two-and-a-half-mile hurdle, and Mohawk Chief in the opening novice hurdle. The team also includes runners in the three-mile chase later in the day.
Off the track, Unibet Summer Plate Ladies Day is Market Rasen’s flagship event of the year. Spectators can enjoy exciting racing, stylish fashion in the popular Style Awards, and live entertainment including a DJ set by N-Trance after racing. Tickets are still available online, starting from £13.60 when booked in advance.
With strong runners, a rich family legacy, and the biggest event of the season ahead, Mickey Bowen looks set for a defining day at Market Rasen.
