Italian jockey Andrea Atzeni will reunite with the Chris So-trained Top Dragon in the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026, the HK$26 million showpiece over 2000 metres at Sha Tin on Sunday, 22 March. The race marks the final and most prestigious leg of Hong Kong’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series, and connections are hopeful the consistent gelding can enjoy the smoother passage that has eluded him in recent outings.

Atzeni arrives in confident mood after a four-win haul at Sha Tin last Sunday (8 March), and he returns to the saddle on Top Dragon with the belief that the partnership can make a meaningful impact in the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 if fortune turns their way.

Trained by Chris So, Top Dragon has been knocking firmly on the door in recent starts. He finished fifth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) two runs back, a race in which he was crowded approaching the 150-metre mark and struggled to find clear running. His most recent performance was even more encouraging, when he finished second by a short head in the Class 2 Year Of The Horse Cup Handicap over the same distance.

Once again, the gelding encountered traffic problems in the straight that prevented a decisive run, yet still produced a determined late effort to go close.

So believes those performances underline the horse’s reliability and competitiveness at the top level.

“Hopefully we will have better luck in the Derby,” So said. “He ran exceptionally well last start, just no luck at all. However, he pulled up well. He’s very consistent, and if we can have better luck this time and can enjoy the run of the race, he’ll run a good race in the Derby.”

Top Dragon’s rating has risen to 87 following that narrow defeat in the Year Of The Horse Cup. The son of Pierata has now compiled an admirable record of three wins, four seconds and two thirds from 13 career appearances, highlighting his steady progress through the grades.

BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 build-up for Top Dragon

Rather than contesting the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m), So opted to keep Top Dragon fresh for the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026. The gelding will instead sharpen up in a barrier trial scheduled for Tuesday (10 March), with Atzeni again in the saddle.

“Atzeni rode him well three starts back in a Class 2 mile race, so I believe he can bring out the best in the horse,” So explained. “Skipping the Classic Cup means the trial will sharpen him up nicely two weeks before the big race.”

The trainer remains confident that the step up to the Derby’s 2000-metre distance will suit his runner.

“I’ve always believed he can handle the 2000m trip of the Derby,” he added. “I look forward to seeing him run another honest race in the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series.”

Elsewhere in the Derby picture, Sagacious Life, trained by Pierre Ng, will also step up preparations with a barrier trial later this week under jockey Karis Teetan.

Currently rated 97, Sagacious Life endured a frustrating run in the Hong Kong Classic Cup when his rider Zac Purton was forced to check near the 200-metre mark, leaving the horse unable to build momentum in the closing stages. He eventually finished last of the 14 runners, though his trainer believes the result did not reflect his true ability.

“The incident in the straight cost him the race,” Ng said. “But he’s fine now, no issues at all. I’m pleased with his condition and will give him a barrier trial later this week. Hopefully he can run better in the Derby.”

With preparations intensifying and several contenders fine-tuning their form, attention now turns to whether Top Dragon can convert his consistency into a defining performance in the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 at Sha Tin.
