The BMW Hong Kong Derby field has been confirmed with an exciting lineup of 14 four-year-olds headed by Little Paradise and Stormy Grove for the 149th running of Hong Kong’s most coveted classic at Sha Tin on Sunday, 22 March. With a purse of HK$26 million and a rich heritage stretching back more than a century, the race represents the ultimate examination for emerging stars in the final leg of the prestigious Four-Year-Old Classic Series.

Little Paradise arrives as the highest-rated runner in the BMW Hong Kong Derby, carrying a mark of 103 after a decisive victory in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m). Owned by Ko Kam Piu and trained by Jimmy Ting, the talented four-year-old seeks a seventh career success while attempting to capture Hong Kong racing’s most celebrated prize.

Stormy Grove, however, looms as a formidable challenger. The chestnut produced a dramatic late surge to land the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m), the second leg of the series, stamping himself as one of the leading contenders for the Derby crown. Trained by Frankie Lor and raced by Lily Chan Li Lei and Marc Chan, Stormy Grove’s impressive turn of foot has already placed him firmly among the elite of this year’s generation.

Lor will also saddle two additional runners — the Centenary Vase Handicap (1800m) winner Numbers and the progressive Regal Gem. Numbers, rated 100, finished a respectable fourth in the Classic Cup, while Regal Gem attempts the longest trip of his career, having yet to race beyond 1650 metres.

BMW Hong Kong Derby: A Historic Test for Four-Year-Olds

First staged in 1873, the BMW Hong Kong Derby is restricted to four-year-olds and has long been regarded as the pinnacle for emerging talent in the region. Over the decades, the race has produced many champions including River Verdon (1991), Oriental Express (1997), Vengeance Of Rain (2005), Viva Pataca (2006), Ambitious Dragon (2011), Designs On Rome (2014), Werther (2016), Rapper Dragon (2017), Golden Sixty (2020), Romantic Warrior (2022), Voyage Bubble (2023) and Cap Ferrat (2025).

Trainer Mark Newnham will attempt to improve on last year’s narrow defeat when he saddles Invincible Ibis for the Ibis Syndicate. The gelding finished runner-up to Stormy Grove in the Hong Kong Classic Cup and appears well poised to challenge again over the extended 2000-metre distance.

Manfred Man’s Patch Of Cosmo adds further intrigue. After overcoming an earlier setback, the talented runner returned with a striking victory in January and later finished a fast-finishing third in the Classic Cup. The Derby will mark his first attempt over 2000 metres, adding an element of uncertainty to his prospects.

Pierre Ng, who finished second in the 2024 Derby with Galaxy Patch, is represented by Brazilian Group 1 winner Sagacious Life. Since arriving in Hong Kong, Sagacious Life has recorded two Class 2 victories from five starts, suggesting he could yet develop into a serious contender.

Few figures are as closely linked to the race as Tony Cruz. The Hong Kong racing legend claimed the Derby four times as a jockey — aboard Co-Tack (1983), Tea For Two II (1987), Clear City (1988) and Makarpura Star (1995) — and later as a trainer with Lucky Owners (2004) and Helene Mascot (2008). Cruz saddles Beauty Bolt, a dual winner who finished third in the Hong Kong Classic Mile for the Kwok Family.

Thirteen-time Hong Kong Champion Trainer John Size also boasts a distinguished record in the series, highlighted by Derby victories with Fay Fay (2012), Luger (2015) and Ping Hai Star (2018). This year he relies on Juneau Pride, who steps up to 2000 metres for the first time in pursuit of the HK$14.56 million winner’s prize.

Chris So sends out the progressive Top Dragon, a three-time winner who endured an interrupted run when finishing fifth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile earlier this season.

Emblazon enters the contest with one of the most impressive recent records. The Cody Mo-trained gelding has won five of his six starts, including his last four in succession. The BMW Hong Kong Derby will present a new challenge, however, as he attempts a distance beyond 1400 metres for the first time.

Trainer Me Tsui will saddle Pope Cody, who has produced consistent efforts this season with one victory and two placings, most recently finishing sixth in the Hong Kong Classic Cup.

David Eustace will field his first runners in the race with Dazzling Fit and Seraph Gabriel. Dazzling Fit boasts three victories at Sha Tin and ran an encouraging fifth in the Classic Cup, while Seraph Gabriel — who previously placed at Royal Ascot before arriving in Hong Kong — adds further international interest to the lineup.

Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, congratulated the owners of the selected runners, describing the race as a defining moment in a horse’s career and noting that the 2026 renewal holds special significance as it is staged in the Year of the Horse.

He remarked that the Derby remains one of the most celebrated sporting events in the city, attracting global attention and continuing a tradition that has produced champions such as Golden Sixty, Romantic Warrior and Voyage Bubble.

Mr Andrew Harding, Executive Director of Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, echoed those sentiments, describing the BMW Hong Kong Derby as the most prestigious contest on Hong Kong’s racing calendar and a race that consistently reveals future stars of the sport.

The race is limited to 14 runners, with Windlord, Circuit Grand Slam, Aerodynamics and Glittering Legend listed as reserves.
