The spotlight on the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026 intensifies this Sunday as Emblazon, the season’s most prolific winner in the field, bids to turn promise into prestige in Hong Kong’s most coveted Classic. Trainer Cody Mo believes his improving four-year-old has earned the right to take his chance, even as he steps into uncharted territory over 2000 metres at Sha Tin.
Emblazon’s journey to the HK$26 million contest has been one of steady progression. Beginning the campaign rated 49, the gelding has climbed sharply through the ranks, arriving at a mark of 88 after a decisive Class 2 success earlier this month under Jerry Chau. That victory, his first at the level, underlined both his consistency and his capacity to improve with racing.
Mo, now in his third training season, speaks with quiet confidence rather than bravado. The Derby, he insists, represents more than just another race. “For everyone in racing, it’s the race you dream about,” he said. “To have a runner is special. To win it would mean everything.”
Distance Test Looms in BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026
The principal question surrounding Emblazon—and indeed much of the field in the BMW Hong Kong Derby 2026—is stamina. Having raced exclusively between 1200m and 1400m, the step up to 2000m presents a new challenge. Only a couple of his rivals have attempted the distance locally, leaving the outcome open and intriguing.
Yet there is encouragement in his racing style. Drawn in barrier eight, Emblazon possesses the tactical versatility to settle comfortably in midfield or slightly closer, conserving energy for the long Sha Tin straight. His relaxed temperament has been a notable asset throughout his rise.
“He’s in top form,” Mo said. “His last win was better than expected. He keeps improving, but of course the distance is the unknown. Still, he’s a four-year-old and at this stage, anything is possible.”
The race brings together a competitive line-up including Top Dragon, Beauty Bolt, Juneau Pride and others, each with their own credentials. But few arrive with the same upward trajectory as Emblazon, who has won four races this season from eight career starts.
A Trainer’s Journey Towards Derby Glory
For Mo, the occasion carries personal significance. Having saddled his first Derby runner only last year, he now returns with a stronger contender and growing experience. His career tally of 86 winners includes a breakout 2024/25 campaign, highlighted by a Group 3 triumph with Pray For Mir.
Much of his grounding came under the guidance of legendary horseman Tony Cruz, whose influence continues to shape Mo’s training philosophy. From those formative years to now preparing a leading Derby hope, the journey has been measured but purposeful.
Emblazon himself has mirrored that trajectory. Winless in two starts last season, he has since strengthened physically and mentally, transforming into one of the most progressive gallopers in the division.
“He surprised us,” Mo admitted. “Last season he wasn’t as strong, but he’s developed in every way. That’s why we’re excited.”
Sunday’s 10-race programme at Sha Tin begins at 1:00 PM, with the Derby scheduled as Race 7 at 4:05 PM. By then, the stage will be set for a defining moment—one that could see Emblazon complete a remarkable rise and hand his trainer a dream realised.
