The Zavaray S. Poonawalla Bangalore Summer Derby 2026, one of the prominent contests of the Indian racing season, will take centre stage at Bangalore Turf Club on Sunday, July 12, with eight three-year-olds declared for the 2000-metre Classic.
Scheduled for 4:00 PM and carrying total prize money of ₹5 crore, the race will bring together some of the country’s leading young horses, trainers and jockeys. The Derby has long been one of the defining events of the Bangalore Summer Meeting and remains a coveted prize on the domestic racing calendar.
Pesi Shroff will saddle two runners, with D’Artagnan partnered by Yash Narredu and Margaretta ridden by G. Vivek. Trainer Prasanna Kumar will also have a two-pronged challenge through Knotty Emperor, the mount of Suraj Narredu, and Pearl Star, who will be ridden by Akshay Kumar.
Digital Empress, trained by L. V. R. Deshmukh, will have Neeraj Rawal in the saddle, while P. Chauhan-trained Havoc will be partnered by Antony Raj S. Moonveil represents trainer S. S. Attaollahi and will be ridden by P. Trevor, while Vortex, trained by Shazaan Shah, completes the field under A. Sandesh.
Trevor’s association with Moonveil adds further interest to the contest. He guided Fynbos to victory in last year’s Bangalore Summer Derby and will now attempt to repeat that success, having returned to race riding recently, following an injury lay-off.
The field may be compact, but the Derby presents an open and demanding examination. Over 2000 metres, the runners will need to settle into a rhythm, conserve their energy and remain effective through the long Bangalore straight, where the race is likely to be decided.
The contest will also provide an important assessment of the current three-year-old generation. Victory in the Bangalore Summer Derby 2026 carries considerable prestige and could shape the future campaigns of several runners as the Indian Classic season develops.
With eight evenly matched contenders and several of Indian racing’s leading professionals involved, Sunday’s feature promises to be the centrepiece of the afternoon at Bangalore Turf Club.
