Haras Rio Iguassu’s 5-year-old Obataye (BRZ) surged past five rivals in the final furlong to capture Saturday’s 1 ½-mile Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini International (G1) at Hipódromo de San Isidro. Ridden by Joao Moreira, Obataye secured the first automatic starting position for next year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In.
Trained by Antonio Oldoni, Obataye recorded his third Group 1 victory of the year, having previously won the Gran Premio Latino Americano (G1) in Brazil. The son of Courtier out of the Crimson Tide (IRE) mare Sufri’n USA completed the 1 ½ miles in 2:24.14 on a track rated “normal,” marking his 10th win in 18 starts.
In a competitive field of 16, Obataye was the 4-1 favorite. He settled in mid-pack early as Jazzy Frank (ARG) led with Vota Bien (ARG) close behind. Coming out of the final turn, Moreira guided Obataye toward the middle while The Gladiator’s Hat (ARG) surged along the inside. Obataye then accelerated to overtake his rivals, winning by 1 ½ lengths over The Gladiator’s Hat. Havana Cigar (BRZ) finished third, followed by Vota Bien in fourth.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, entry fees for Obataye in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf will be covered, and a travel allowance is provided for starters based outside North America. Pre-entry for the Breeders’ Cup program closes on October 19, 2026, to receive these benefits.
