Angus Chung is set to broaden his international riding experience this summer as he prepares for a stint in Great Britain, marking another step in his evolving career. The accomplished rider will spend a few weeks working with Ralph Beckett’s Kimpton Down Stables in Hampshire after the conclusion of the Hong Kong racing season in mid-July. This upcoming venture offers Chung an exciting opportunity to develop his racing craft in a different environment before returning home in time for local barrier trials.

At 28, Chung has matured into a seasoned competitor, having made his mark on the Hong Kong racing scene with a series of notable achievements. Since reaching senior rider status by surpassing 70 local wins under the mentorship of Tony Cruz, Chung has continued to shine, notching up 16 victories this season alone. His steady rise reflects a strong foundation built during his apprentice days, particularly in Australia where he tallied 76 wins before returning to race at home.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Chung captured the Tony Cruz Award for the 2023/24 season, further cementing his reputation as a dedicated and skilled jockey. With 93 wins to his name since making his Hong Kong debut in the 2022/23 term, his progress has been both rapid and consistent. The upcoming trip to the UK is not just a break from routine but a chance to explore new riding dynamics, from track conditions to tactical pace, which vary significantly between Hong Kong and British circuits.

Following a path similar to fellow Hong Kong jockey Vincent Ho, Chung views this experience as a valuable learning opportunity. Ho’s own off-season experiences abroad helped him develop the versatility and skills that earned him international recognition, including a standout performance at the Shergar Cup at Ascot. Chung hopes his time abroad will allow him to build new connections, engage with unfamiliar horses, and test himself on different courses, all while embracing a fresh racing culture.

Before he departs, Chung remains focused on his current commitments. He is scheduled for a busy evening at Happy Valley with eight rides on the card. Among his key mounts is Telecom Fighters, a seasoned competitor entering a tough Class 2 contest. Despite the strong competition, Chung remains confident in the horse’s capability and experience.

He also continues his partnership with the progressive galloper Parents’ Love, who has shown remarkable improvement this season. Rising through the ranks from Class 5 to Class 3, the horse has consistently delivered strong performances, racking up three wins along with multiple placings. Chung is pleased with the horse’s rapid development and is optimistic about his continued progress.

Other rides for the evening include The Way We Win, Wah May Wai Wai, Harmony N Home, My Flying Angel, Lovero, and Star Satyr. The midweek meeting kicks off with the Class 5 Yue Wan Handicap at 6:40pm, promising another action-packed night of racing.

With his eyes set on the future, both near and far, Angus Chung is embracing every opportunity to grow, adapt, and refine his craft — proving once again that his dedication to the sport goes well beyond the finish line.
