Aintree’s festive atmosphere was electric on Saturday, 6th December, as connections celebrated standout performances in the William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Wirral Juvenile Hurdle and supporting races. Among them, Lord left his jubilant team “absolutely thrilled” after a commanding display that hinted at future Cheltenham ambitions.
Purchased from Olly Murphy’s yard for £70,000 after three wins in August and September, the gelded son of Best Solution carved through his rivals with a measured yet relentless pace. Guided by Brian Hughes, the six-year-old hit his stride early, galloping away from the field to claim a convincing five-length victory over 2-1 favourite Bibe Mus. Owner David Shaw described the moment as “very exciting,” adding that Cheltenham could now be a target for the season.
“It looked like the right tactic to lead,” Hughes said. “Once we got going, there was no catching him. He has the makings of a real star.”
The day’s excitement did not stop there. Taurus Bay, owned by former FA Cup-winning manager Harry Redknapp and Geoff Hill, continued his unbeaten streak under Rules with an authoritative success in the Daily Bet Boosts At William Hill Novices’ Hurdle. After stalking early leader Captain Hugo, the 15-8 second-favourite surged after the last to score by over four lengths. Trainer Ben Pauling praised the gelding’s clever jumping and hinted at a potential return to Aintree for the Grade One William Hill Formby Novices’ Hurdle on Boxing Day.
Meanwhile, over the fences, Nigel Twiston-Davies celebrated a double triumph. Guard The Moon impressed on his chase debut in the William Hill Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, overcoming a slight mistake at the final fence to win by three lengths. Later, Uncle Bert made a statement in the William Hill Racing Winnings Boost Handicap Chase, galloping clear by nine lengths and attracting attention for the Coral Welsh Grand National later that month. Twiston-Davies highlighted the importance of patience and careful schooling in both victories.
Tristan Durrell also continued his fine form with Top Guy in the William Hill Each Way Extra Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. The three-mile contest saw Top Guy rally late to secure a hard-fought one-and-a-quarter length success, showcasing both rider timing and the gelding’s stamina. Assistant trainer Nick Pearce praised the performance as “a peach of a ride” and a testament to the horse’s attitude and training.
From juvenile stars to seasoned campaigners, William Hill Becher Chase Day at Aintree delivered excitement, strategy, and triumph — a showcase of the sport’s depth and talent that left connections and racing fans alike savoring every moment.
