The French Riviera offered a spectacular stage on Saturday evening as Cannes hosted one of the most anticipated showpieces of the international showjumping calendar. With the Mediterranean breeze drifting through a packed arena and a world-class field assembled under the coastal night sky, the contest delivered sport at its most exacting and dramatic.

Abdel Said and Wathnan Zasou vom Claashof emerged victorious in a contest that kept spectators on edge from the opening round to the final stride.

Course designer Uliano Vezzani once again tested the very best, setting a demanding 1.60m track that required precision, courage and flawless timing. From a field of 40 elite combinations, only a select group managed to master the first phase and earn a place in the decisive jump-off, as rails fell at crucial moments and several leading hopes were halted just short of the final stage.

The opening round proved unforgiving, with experienced challengers such as Cian O’Connor, Pieter Devos, and Philipp Weishaupt all finishing on four faults, underlining how finely balanced the competition remained throughout the evening.

When the jump-off arrived, the tempo shifted entirely. Michael Pender and HHS Cyprus set the early benchmark, producing a polished clear in 41.35 seconds that immediately applied pressure on the remaining contenders. Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann followed with another composed round, but her time of 43.44 seconds left her in provisional second.

Then came the decisive moment of the evening.

Abdel Said, partnering the talented Wathnan Zasou vom Claashof, produced a round of extraordinary pace and intent. Every turn was attacked, every stride measured with precision, as the pair delivered a breathtaking clear in 39.44 seconds, a time that ultimately proved unbeatable.

Last to go, Andreas Schou pushed hard in pursuit of victory but saw his challenge undone by a costly error at fence five, bringing the competition to a close and confirming Said as the winner of a fiercely contested Grand Prix.

Speaking after his triumph, Said praised his mount’s composure at the highest level, highlighting the mare’s response to pressure and the energy of the Cannes crowd, which lifted the intensity of the occasion even further.

For Pender, the runner-up finish marked a strong statement with a rising talent in HHS Cyprus, while Meyer-Zimmermann’s consistency once again placed her among the leading performers on a stage she knows well.

Beyond the Grand Prix result, the championship standings took on renewed significance. Simon Delestre remains at the top, closely pursued by Katrin Eckermann, while Said’s victory pushes him firmly into title contention as the season continues its demanding rhythm.

With just seconds separating success from disappointment and every round demanding absolute focus, Cannes once again reinforced its reputation as one of the most testing stops on the global circuit.

As attention now turns to the next stage in Saint-Tropez, the momentum of the series shows no sign of slowing, with the championship picture wide open and elite combinations continuing to trade places at the top.
