Trainer Jamie Snowden celebrated a major career milestone on Friday as Julius Des Pictons surged to a dramatic late victory in the Oddschecker Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. The result marked Snowden’s first triumph at the Grade One level, an achievement that eluded him despite previous placings and Festival successes. The three-mile test saw Julius Des Pictons, sent off at 14-1, overcome stamina concerns to power through the final stages and secure a memorable win under jockey Gavin Sheehan.
Snowden’s approach to the season had largely involved shorter distances, but as the ground conditions shifted, a step up in trip became viable. The uncertainty around the gelding’s staying ability made the victory even more rewarding. Sheehan’s composed ride complemented the horse’s determined finish, and the success held added significance for the ownership group, The Footie Partnership, whose long-standing support played a pivotal role in the team’s journey to the top.
Finishing two lengths behind in second was the 50-1 outsider Minella Rescue, trained by Gary Hanmer. Coming off an unlucky recent run and an earlier seasonal break, expectations were modest heading into the race. Nonetheless, the performance exceeded predictions, especially given the gelding’s preference for firmer ground. Hanmer reflected on earlier missteps in campaign planning but expressed optimism about upcoming targets. With limited novice time remaining, potential plans include a lower-grade novice event or a tilt at the Galway Festival, provided the horse recovers well from his effort.
In third was Crest Of Fortune, trained by Anthony Honeyball. The connections opted to bypass handicaps in favour of this contest, believing the longer trip would suit the horse’s breeding. Despite showing some immaturity and a few jumping issues, the gelding delivered a performance that bodes well for the future. The team now considers a switch to chasing next season, acknowledging that while he’s physically strong, there’s more development to come.
The Sefton Novices’ Hurdle proved a revealing race, not only crowning a new Grade One winner in Julius Des Pictons but also highlighting the potential of his rivals, each with different but promising paths ahead.
