Rob Dolan of Saratoga Springs, New York, secured first place in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, recording total earnings of $625,794 following the two-day competition held at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 30 and 31.

The 18th annual competition attracted a record 693 participants, marking a 7.7% increase in entries compared with 2025. The event coincided with the 43rd Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which featured a two-day programme of 22 races.

Dolan, 45, secured the top position after making a decisive selection involving Sovereignty and The Puma in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). His performance earned him a total score of $140,694, which, combined with the first-place prize of $485,100, brought his overall earnings to $625,794.

It was only Dolan’s second appearance in the competition. He had entered the tournament in 2025 after watching a television interview with Matt Miller, the author and 2021 competition winner. Miller also featured among the leading participants this year.

Reflecting on his achievement, Dolan described the result as exciting and surprising, explaining that several of his leading selections had not delivered the expected results earlier in the competition.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Records Three Leading Finishers

Dolan had remained around the middle of the standings before the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. His final selection helped him move to the top of the leaderboard and secure the overall title.

Clay Sanders of Memphis, Tennessee, finished second with a score of $130,847. Along with his second-place prize of $323,400, his total earnings reached $454,247.

Miller, from Northbrook, Illinois, secured third place with a score of $125,201. His third-place prize of $173,250 brought his overall earnings to $298,451.

The 2026 competition also recorded a total prize pool of $1,732,500, the largest in its history. Participants competed from Keeneland, the official satellite location at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, and through online platforms.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships featured 14 Grade 1 championship races and offered more than $34 million in purses and awards. The 2027 edition will take place on October 29 and 30 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

Rob Dolan claimed first place in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge with total earnings of $625,794, ahead of Clay Sanders and Matt Miller in a record 693-entry competition.
