The Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky, will lose one of its notable contenders following the withdrawal of Magnitude on veterinary advice. The four-year-old, a dual Grade 1 winner this season, will instead head to Ashford Stud to begin his stud career, with his retirement now confirmed.

Trainer Steve Asmussen made the decision to withdraw the Winchell Thoroughbreds-owned runner following veterinary advice. Magnitude had enjoyed an outstanding campaign, highlighted by victories in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster (G1), which established him among the leading older horses of the season.

Ashford Stud confirmed in a statement that Magnitude had been retired to the farm, with the move originally planned for after the Breeders’ Cup. Bred by Ron Stolich, the four-year-old son of Not This Time completed his racing career with eight wins, two second-place finishes and one third-place finish from 15 starts.

His career earnings reached $9,626,365, reflecting a successful racing journey that included some of the biggest victories of his career. Magnitude had also attracted considerable attention as an early contender for the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) before returning at four to deliver his most significant performances.

His absence will leave a seven-horse field for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The remaining line-up will feature defending champion and reigning Japanese Horse of the Year Forever Young (JPN), alongside reigning American Horse of the Year Sovereignty.

Both runners will arrive at the Classic with previous connections to Magnitude through their encounters earlier in the season. Forever Young finished behind him in the Dubai World Cup, while Sovereignty was beaten by him in the Stephen Foster. With Magnitude now retired, attention will turn to the remaining contenders as they prepare for the prestigious Keeneland contest.

Magnitude will miss the Breeders’ Cup Classic following a veterinary recommendation and will retire to Ashford Stud after recording eight wins and $9,626,365 in career earnings.
