Redland Rebels Gulfstream Park will be the focus on Sunday, October 11, as the three-year-old returns to his preferred surface for a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance feature at Gulfstream Park. Trainer Patrick Biancone is hopeful the gelding can build on his recent performances and reproduce the form that made him a promising prospect earlier in his career.
Owned by Calypso Stables 2024 LLC, Redland Rebels showed ability during the spring while competing in major dirt races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The son of Uncle Chuck finished fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 3) after setting the pace into the stretch, before placing sixth in the Arkansas Derby (Grade 1). However, his connections believe turf remains the surface on which he is most effective.
Sunday’s ninth race will bring together three-year-olds and older runners over 1 1/16 miles on the grass. Redland Rebels will face seven rivals, with jockey J. G. Torrealba returning to the saddle.
Redland Rebels Gulfstream Park Return Offers Fresh Opportunity
Redland Rebels first demonstrated his ability on turf at Gulfstream Park last year, breaking his maiden in his second career start. After a period away from competition, he returned during the 2025–2026 Championship Meet and contested the Kitten’s Joy Stakes on January 31.
In that 1 1/16-mile turf contest for three-year-olds, he set the pace and fought hard through the stretch, only to finish a neck behind the winner. The performance offered further evidence of his suitability for grass racing.
Biancone subsequently gave the gelding a break before bringing him back to competition. Redland Rebels returned to the Gulfstream winner’s circle on August 15, producing an off-the-pace performance to win a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance by 1¾ lengths.
His most recent appearance came in a mile-and-70-yard allowance that was transferred from turf to the Tapeta surface following rain. After setting a pressured pace, he finished a neck short of victory.
The trainer remains encouraged by that effort but believes a return to grass will suit the runner better.
Redland Rebels has trained well in preparation for Sunday, and his connections will be looking for him to translate that condition into another strong performance on his preferred surface.
Gulfstream Park Sunday Racecard: Other Runners to Watch
The ninth race will conclude a varied programme at Gulfstream Park, with several other contests offering opportunities to assess runners across turf and Tapeta.
Race 4 will feature a one-mile optional claiming allowance for three-year-olds and older horses. Pioneer Prince is scheduled to make his first start for trainer Sam Wilensky after winning a one-mile race at Del Mar on September 6. Sneak Preview, trained by Mark Passley, and Lou the Body, prepared by Victor Barboza Jr., also return after finishing first and second, respectively, under the same conditions in their previous outing.
Race 5 will bring a field of 10 two-year-olds together for a maiden contest over one mile on turf. The sixth race will feature fillies and mares over a one-turn mile on the main track.
In Race 7, Joe Orseno-trained Sticky McShnickens will contest a five-furlong race on turf. Fernando De La Cruz, the leading rider at Horseshoe Indianapolis, will take the mount after travelling to Gulfstream for Saturday’s programme.
Sticky McShnickens has finished second or third in 15 of 23 career starts, although the runner has recorded only one victory. The assignment presents another opportunity to convert that consistency into a stronger finishing result.
Race 8 will feature Full Nelson, trained by Barboza, in a mile-and-70-yard optional claiming allowance on Tapeta. The runner will attempt to extend a sequence of two consecutive victories on the all-weather surface.
Redland Rebels will then take centre stage in the closing race, where a return to turf could prove important to his chances of regaining winning form.
Gulfstream Park’s Sunday card offers a mix of developing runners, established performers and horses seeking to improve their recent records. For Redland Rebels, the return to grass represents an opportunity to build on his earlier turf performances and re-establish himself after his spring campaign on dirt.
