Rogue Passion Takes Next Step in Newmarket Group One Challenge

Rogue Passion prepares for the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket
By | 09 Oct 2026 | Mumbai

Rogue Passion will provide trainer Ed Bethell with another opportunity to add to his growing reputation when the Sioux Nation filly contests the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Friday, October 9. With a career-best 66 winners already recorded in 2026, Bethell will be hoping his progressive two-year-old can take the next step after an encouraging victory at Longchamp.

The £500,000 contest headlines Dubai Future Champions Friday at Newmarket and represents a significant test for Rogue Passion, who has developed steadily through her early starts before making her mark at Group Two level in France.

Owned by Rogues Gallery Racing, the filly showed promise in maiden company at Catterick and Carlisle before breaking through with an emphatic novice victory at Carlisle in August. That performance confirmed the promise Bethell had seen at home and set the stage for a more demanding assignment.

Her latest outing proved the most significant of her young career. On September 6, she travelled to Longchamp for the Group Two Prix d’Aumale, where she stepped up to a mile and defeated Amusingly by a neck under Rossa Ryan. The jockey, who partnered her for the first time in France, will retain the ride at Newmarket.

The form received a notable boost on Arc Day when Amusingly returned to Longchamp and won the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac, strengthening the credentials of Rogue Passion’s narrow victory.

Rogue Passion Earns Her Newmarket Opportunity

Bethell believes the filly has always possessed above-average ability, although her rapid progress to Group Two success came sooner than he might have expected.

Speaking during a Zoom call organised by The Jockey Club, the trainer explained that Rogue Passion had caught the stable’s attention well before her breakthrough on the racecourse. He felt she had been unlucky on her second start at Carlisle before showing her class with an impressive victory at the same venue on her third appearance.

Bethell said her success in France was not entirely unexpected, given the confidence the stable had maintained in her ability. The key question had been whether she could make the transition to a higher level so quickly.

He also indicated that the filly had prepared satisfactorily for her return, although her work at home had made it difficult to judge how much further she might have progressed since Longchamp.

With her Group Two credentials established, Bethell believes the Fillies’ Mile offers a worthwhile opportunity to test her against the best of her generation. He acknowledged that the options at her current level were becoming more limited and that Newmarket presented the chance to discover how far she could go.

Ed Bethell Looks to Add Another Group One Success

Bethell has already enjoyed success at the highest level, with Regional winning the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock Park in 2023. The trainer took over from his father, James Bethell, in 2021 and has since continued to build a strong record with horses capable of competing in major races.

Asked whether Rogue Passion could become the best horse to have passed through his hands, Bethell was reluctant to make comparisons before the filly had further opportunities to prove herself.

He pointed to Regional’s achievements and acknowledged that the stable had other talented horses capable of competing at Group One level. Comparing horses from different generations and with different strengths, he suggested, was never straightforward.

For Rogue Passion, Friday’s Fillies’ Mile will offer a clear measure of her progress. Her Longchamp success and the subsequent achievement of Amusingly have provided encouraging evidence, but Newmarket will demand another strong performance against a competitive field.

Bethell will be hoping the filly can build on her French success and give the stable another memorable afternoon at the highest level.
