Registration will open for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, with the 18th edition of the major Thoroughbred racing handicapping tournament scheduled to take place alongside the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 30 and 31.
The two-day competition will bring participants together during one of the biggest meetings on the international racing calendar. Players will compete throughout the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, with the tournament winner to be determined by the highest accumulated bankroll at the end of the two-day event.
Keeneland will serve as the main venue for the tournament, while participants will also be able to take part from an official satellite location at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Online participation will also be available through designated platforms, extending the competition to horseplayers across North America.
The tournament will carry an expected total cash prize pool of $1.5 million, based on a minimum field of 600 players. The registration package will include a $2,500 entry fee and a $7,500 competition bankroll, bringing the total required amount to $10,000 per participant.
All entry-fee money will be directed towards the prize pool, while participants will compete using their allocated bankroll during the two days of the World Championships. The tournament format will allow players to build their bankroll through selected racing pools throughout the championship programme.
2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Returns to Keeneland
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge will follow a record-setting 2025 edition held at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The previous renewal will provide the latest benchmark for participation, with 643 entries recorded during the 2025 competition, surpassing the earlier record of 585 entries established in 2024.
The 2025 event will also have generated approximately $8.9 million in total handle, while nearly $4.5 million will have been recorded on-site at Del Mar during the World Championships. The average handle per entry will have reached approximately $13,846, marking the highest figure recorded since 2014.
The 2025 title will have gone to Lexington-based financial planner Dave Smyth, who will have produced a major late move during the final stages of the competition. Entering the final race in 45th position with a $19,000 bankroll, Smyth will have moved to the top of the standings after successfully connecting with a Daily Double involving Nysos in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Gezora in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Smyth will have finished with a final bankroll of $144,800 and will have collected $607,800 from his victory.
The 2026 competition will also provide opportunities for participants to qualify without paying the standard entry fee. Free entries will be available through qualifying contests conducted ahead of the World Championships, with live and online qualifying opportunities scheduled through designated organisers.
The Breeders’ Cup World Championships themselves will feature 14 Grade 1 Championship races over two days, with more than $34 million in purses and awards scheduled across the meeting. Keeneland will therefore provide the setting for both the championship racing programme and the latest edition of the major handicapping tournament.
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be followed by the 2027 renewal, which will be scheduled for October 29 and 30 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. NBC Sports will provide live television coverage of the 2026 Championships.
Breeders’ Cup Limited will continue to administer the World Championships and its wider international racing programmes, including the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, which will provide automatic starting positions in championship races through qualifying events conducted around the world.
With registration now opening ahead of the October meeting, attention will turn towards the field for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge as participants prepare for two days of competition at Keeneland.
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup Challenge will take place at Keeneland on October 30–31 alongside the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, with registration opening ahead of the two-day tournament.
