Puro Magic produced a determined front-running performance to claim the Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse on Sunday, September 27, securing her first G1 victory. The five-year-old mare broke sharply from the widest stall, took control early and held on by a neck after facing a strong challenge in the closing stages.

The victory marked a breakthrough at the highest level for Puro Magic, who had made six previous attempts in G1 company. The daughter of Asia Express had already established herself as a leading sprint performer over 1,000 and 1,200 metres, collecting three graded victories before finally adding a major G1 prize to her record.

Her earlier graded successes included the 2024 Aoi Stakes and Kitakyushu Kinen, both over 1,200 metres, along with the 2025 Ibis Summer Dash over 1,000 metres. Those results had underlined her ability to perform at the highest level over sprint distances.

Puro Magic had also maintained a strong run of form during the 2026 season. She won the Hakodate Sprint Stakes in June before returning to victory in the Ibis Summer Dash in August. Three weeks before the Sprinters Stakes, she finished second in the Centaur Stakes, a result that secured the Summer Sprint Series championship.

Puro Magic Sprinters Stakes Victory Came After a Fast Start

Puro Magic broke quickly from the outside stall and immediately moved into the lead. Mirai Iwata allowed the mare to dictate the pace as she travelled comfortably in front, establishing a lead of around three lengths while negotiating the turns.

The leader continued to hold control as the field approached the final straight. However, the pressure intensified during the closing stages as World’s End began to make ground along the inside, while Sound Moryana also moved into contention.

Puro Magic responded strongly when challenged and found enough in the final stages to maintain her advantage. She crossed the finish line a neck ahead of World’s End in a winning time of 1:09.2. The mare covered the final 600 metres in 35.6 seconds.

The victory also gave trainer Shogo Yasuda his second JRA G1 success since Danon Decile won the 2024 Tokyo Yushun. For Iwata, the result represented his second G1 triumph after his success aboard Arma Veloce in the 2024 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies.

After the race, Iwata said he had been concerned about the ground but was pleased with how Puro Magic handled the conditions. He also noted that she had settled better than in her previous outing and used her natural speed to secure the lead before maintaining her advantage to the finish.

World’s End produced another strong performance to finish second. Akihide Tsumura positioned the five-year-old around third along the rails before beginning his challenge in the straight. World’s End continued to close on Puro Magic with every stride but ultimately finished a neck behind the winner.

The runner-up result added to a solid season for World’s End, who had also finished second in the Yasuda Kinen earlier in the campaign. He again showed his ability to compete strongly against a high-quality field but could not quite catch the leader at Nakayama.

Sound Moryana completed the top three following a close battle for second. The four-year-old filly broke well before settling around fifth and moved forward alongside World’s End around the final turn. She remained firmly involved through the final 200 metres but was beaten by a nose for second place.

Star Anise finished fourth after encountering traffic during the run into the straight. Christophe Lemaire had kept the three-year-old towards the rear and wider on the course. After finding an opening around 200 metres from the finish, the Oka Sho winner produced a strong late run but could not reach the leading trio.

Red Mon Reve finished fifth after making a late move from the rear, while Win Carnelian followed in sixth. A T Makfi was seventh, with June Blair and Pair Pollux sharing eighth place. Mama Cocha finished 10th, followed by Ai Sansan in 11th and Flicker Jab in 12th.

Rapier took 13th, Lugal finished 14th, Panja Tower was 15th and Black Chalice completed the field in 16th.

The Sprinters Stakes was run over 1,200 metres on good turf at Nakayama Racecourse, with 16 runners taking part. The race has been one of Japan’s major sprint contests since its establishment in 1967. It became a G1 event in 1990 and has continued alongside the Takamatsunomiya Kinen as one of the country’s leading 1,200-metre sprint races.

Puro Magic’s victory also marked the first G1 success for her sire Asia Express, who won the 2013 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. The result added another significant achievement to the mare’s record following her consistent performances throughout the 2026 season.

For Puro Magic, the Sprinters Stakes finally delivered the G1 breakthrough that had remained just beyond her reach. After building a strong sprint record and collecting major victories earlier in the season, she controlled the race from the front and held on under pressure to secure the biggest win of her career.

Puro Magic secured her first G1 crown in the Sprinters Stakes after leading from the start and holding off World’s End by a neck at Nakayama Racecourse.
