Warwick Racecourse cancelled its scheduled fixture for Wednesday, September 30, following a detailed assessment of the track and the continuing impact of dry weather. The decision, announced on Friday, September 25, meant the planned meeting did not go ahead after officials concluded that the ground was unlikely to reach the required standard for racing.
The announcement followed a review of the previous fixture, consultation with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), feedback from participants and consideration of the weather forecast for the final days of September. The combination of recent racing, track repairs, limited watering capacity and prolonged hot and dry conditions contributed to the decision.
The cancellation came after Warwick had experienced a particularly dry period. The racecourse reported that the effects of the previous Tuesday’s racing had left the track unable to receive water for two full days. The first day was the raceday itself, while the following day was required for repairs to the racing surface.
As the weather remained dry, the ground subsequently dried out more than Warwick wanted. Although the racecourse had sufficient watering capacity to maintain the existing conditions, it did not have enough capacity to significantly improve the surface ahead of the September 30 meeting.
Warwick Racecourse Cancels Fixture After Ground Review
Nessie Chanter, Clerk of the Course at Warwick Racecourse, said the decision had been taken with the provision of safe and suitable ground as the priority. She explained that the racecourse had carefully considered the condition of the track following the previous fixture and the continuing weather conditions.
The previous Tuesday’s racing had created a particular challenge for the course. The track could not be watered during the raceday, and watering was also not possible on the following day because the surface was undergoing repairs. This created a two-day period without watering at a time when the course was already dealing with the effects of an extended hot and dry summer.
The prolonged dry weather subsequently affected the condition of the ground. Warwick was able to maintain the existing surface through its available watering capacity, but officials considered that maintaining the current conditions would not be enough to produce the improvement required before the next scheduled meeting.
The forecast for the end of September added another consideration. Warwick had looked ahead to an unusually dry and hot period and assessed the likely effect that continued weather conditions would have on the track. With limited scope to improve the ground, officials decided that cancelling the fixture at an early stage was the appropriate course of action for the race meeting.
The racecourse also reviewed the circumstances surrounding the previous fixture and considered feedback from participants. The consultation formed part of the wider assessment before the cancellation was confirmed.
Warwick also consulted with the BHA before reaching its decision. The discussions, together with the track assessment and weather outlook, helped officials determine that the September 30 fixture could not be staged under the conditions they required.
The cancellation was announced five days before the scheduled meeting, giving participants and other stakeholders advance notice of the change. It also allowed Warwick to end preparations for the September fixture and turn its attention towards the remainder of its racing programme.
The decision followed a combination of factors rather than a single issue. The effects of the previous Tuesday’s racing, the subsequent track repairs, the inability to water for two days, the continued dry weather and the forecast for the final part of September all contributed to the assessment.
The watering arrangements were particularly relevant because the available capacity had allowed Warwick to maintain the ground but not improve it sufficiently. With the forecast indicating further dry and hot conditions, officials faced limited opportunity to make the changes they considered necessary before September 30.
The course therefore opted to cancel the fixture rather than continue with preparations while the ground remained below the standard required for the meeting.
The cancellation also changed Warwick’s immediate racing schedule. The racecourse confirmed that its next scheduled raceday became November 3, giving officials a longer period to prepare the track following the September cancellation.
Attention subsequently turned towards the November fixture and the remaining programme for the 2026-27 season. Warwick said its focus had shifted to providing the best possible conditions for racing during the rest of the season.
The decision also provided clarity for participants ahead of the originally scheduled Wednesday meeting. By announcing the cancellation before race day, Warwick gave those involved sufficient notice that the September 30 programme would not take place.
The circumstances surrounding the cancellation highlighted the importance of ground management during periods of prolonged dry weather. Warwick’s assessment took into account not only the condition of the surface but also the practical time available for watering and repairs before the next meeting.
The previous fixture had required repairs immediately afterwards, which meant the course could not water the track on the following day. The resulting gap, combined with the continuing hot and dry conditions, contributed to the deterioration of the ground beyond the level Warwick wanted for the September 30 meeting.
With the available watering system able to maintain but not substantially improve the surface, the racecourse determined that proceeding with the fixture would not provide the conditions it required.
Warwick subsequently confirmed the cancellation and redirected its preparations towards November 3. The course also stated that its wider focus remained on maintaining suitable racing conditions throughout the remainder of the 2026-27 season.
The September 30 cancellation therefore followed a detailed review involving the ground conditions, recent racing activity, track maintenance, watering limitations, participant feedback, BHA consultation and the expected weather. Warwick’s next scheduled meeting became November 3.
