Riyadh’s King Abdulaziz Racecourse witnessed thrilling high-profile racing action, culminating in a historic moment as RATTLE N ROLL became the first international runner to gain automatic qualification for the $20 million Saudi Cup. The Kenny McPeek-trained star clinched victory in THE CUSTODIAN OF THE TWO HOLY MOSQUES CUP (Group 3), held on Saturday, earning his place in next month’s prestigious global event.

Ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Joel Rosario, the American-bred son of Connect delivered a commanding performance in the 1800m contest. Owned by Lucky Seven Stable and leased to Saudi businessman Sharaf Al Hariri for his Middle Eastern campaign, RATTLE N ROLL’s Riyadh triumph ensures his position on the world stage. Connections are also eyeing a potential run in the Dubai World Cup on April 5, further solidifying the horse’s credentials on the international circuit.

The domestic scene also shone brightly, with SAIF BARZAN securing the KING ABDULAZIZ CUP for Arabian Horses and TAJ BLAADI, sired by Bandini, claiming the KING ABDULAZIZ CUP for HRH Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdulaziz’s Red Stable. These results underscored the depth of local talent amidst the international presence.

Among other notable performances, Doug O’Neill’s EJ WON THE CUP and INDEX FUND featured prominently but fell short of victory. The weekend also saw exciting qualifiers, including the Saudi Derby Qualifier (2000 GUINEAS) sponsored by Saudi National Bank, the AL-DAREYAH CUP (PA G1 Obaiya Arabian Classic Qualifier), and the Listed PRINCE KHALID ABDULLAH CUP, a gateway to the Neom Turf Cup.

MACDUFF, a former UK-trained Epsom Derby runner now with Bahraini trainer Fawzi Nass, competed valiantly but continues to seek his top form. ARMY ETHOS, another former UK-trained runner now under Nass, debuted in the 1351 TURF SPRINT QUALIFIER, adding to the event’s global appeal.

The weekend’s events have solidified the Saudi Cup meeting, scheduled for February 22, as a pinnacle of international racing. RATTLE N ROLL’s landmark achievement sets the stage for a captivating race, where the world’s best will converge for a shot at racing’s richest prize.
