Jonathan Burke is hoping his first ride at Epsom Downs will end with a memorable victory when he partners Nibras Gold in the Jump Jockeys Derby Handicap on Sunday, September 27, as the Surrey course stages its Season Finale.

The Grade One-winning rider will exchange the familiar hurdles and fences for the unique challenge of Epsom Downs, teaming up with trainer James Owen and the versatile eight-year-old over a mile and a half.

Burke arrives at the meeting with confidence after recently guiding Nibras Gold to victory at Chester in another contest restricted to jump jockeys. A second success at Epsom Downs would give the partnership a notable double at two very different tracks.

“I’ve never been to Epsom Downs, but obviously it is steeped in history and one to tick off the bucket list,” Burke said. “These races are a nice incentive to have.

“We are very lucky to have them at four unique tracks in Chester, Epsom, Goodwood and York.”

The 30-year-old has long regarded Epsom Downs as one of racing’s iconic venues. Although he has never previously ridden there, the Derby course has been a familiar sight from afar, with the annual Classic forming part of his early memories of the sport.

“From a kid, and even now, when the Derby is on, you always sit down to watch it as it is an iconic race,” he said. “Even though I’ve never been there, or had anything to do with a Derby horse, it is an amazing race to watch. It will be pretty cool to ride over that track and trip.”

Burke believes Nibras Gold has the balance and versatility required to cope with the demands of the Surrey circuit. While Chester offers a very different test, its tight turns require a horse to maintain concentration and balance throughout.

Jonathan Burke Confident Nibras Gold Can Handle Epsom Downs

“Nibras Gold is one thing that is balanced,” Burke said. “He is also a very adaptable horse, as he has run over hurdles and fences. He should be able to handle the undulations and configurations of Epsom Downs.”

The gelding, a son of 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, has already shown his versatility across different types of racing. He also has two hurdle victories to his name and has demonstrated an ability to cope with varying ground conditions.

“He is very versatile regarding ground as well,” Burke added. “He is a very kind and consistent horse for the syndicate and James.

“He is a very tough and honest horse so I’m sure he will enjoy his day out as well.”

For Burke, the occasion is as much about experiencing a new venue as it is about chasing another victory.

“It is just nice to get the opportunity to go and ride around places like this. I will get the full experience on Sunday and I’m looking forward to it.”

Burke’s appearance at Epsom Downs also reflects an important change in his career. At the end of last season, he left his position as stable jockey to trainer Fergal O’Brien and began operating as a freelance rider.

The move has brought fresh opportunities, with Burke developing a strong association with Owen while also taking on an increased role with the Noel Fehily Syndicate.

Owen has provided Burke with a growing collection of opportunities, while his work with the Noel Fehily Syndicate has opened the door to horses trained by several handlers.

Among the horses Burke is particularly looking forward to seeing this season is Baron Noir, who finished fourth in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival before placing third in the Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. The youngster will now embark on a novice chasing campaign.

Midnight Jukebox, a bumper winner for Fergal O’Brien last season, is another name on Burke’s list, while Ryan’s Rocket is expected to be aimed at competitive two-mile handicap chases.

“They would be three I’m looking forward to among lots of nice ones,” Burke said.

Before those winter targets take centre stage, however, Burke has an altogether different assignment. His first appearance at Epsom Downs will provide the opportunity to experience one of British racing’s most distinctive tracks from the saddle — and, with Nibras Gold beneath him, the chance to turn that long-awaited debut into a memorable afternoon.
