Sha Tin will provide a searching early-season examination on Sunday, 27 September, when Soleil Fighter takes on a high-quality field in the HK$4.2 million G3 Celebration Cup Handicap over 1400 metres.
The six-year-old will make a first appearance at Group level after a progressive 2025/26 campaign, but the assignment represents a significant rise in class. Trainer David Hayes has been encouraged by the gelding’s development and believes this race will show whether Soleil Fighter can hold his own against some of Hong Kong’s established performers.
The field includes all three winners from last season’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series, alongside leading sprinter Helios Express and four-time Group winner Galaxy Patch.
Sha Tin Brings Together a Strong Group-Level Field
Galaxy Patch and Helios Express, both carrying 135lb, will begin their campaigns over a distance that has not regularly produced wins for either horse. Both have raced three times over 1400 metres without success, although each has finished at Group 1 level over the trip.
Last season’s Hong Kong Derby winner Invincible Ibis will carry 127lb, while Classic Cup victor Stormy Grove has been allotted 118lb. Little Paradise, winner of the Hong Kong Classic Mile, completes a formidable group of established performers and adds further depth to the contest.
Against that backdrop, Soleil Fighter will have little margin for error.
The Hayes-trained gelding began his campaign with a seventh-place finish from eight runners in a Class 2 1400-metre handicap on the opening day of the season. The performance was below his best, although his trainer believes the run can be improved upon.
Soleil Fighter produced two victories last season, scoring over 1800 metres and 1600 metres. Hugh Bowman partnered the horse to the longer-distance success, while apprentice Nichola Yuen was aboard for the 1600-metre win. Both victories came from the front.
Yuen makes way this time for Harry Bentley, who will become the 13th different jockey to partner Soleil Fighter in Hong Kong.
The draw has placed Soleil Fighter in gate seven, and his ability to secure a forward position could prove important. Hayes has indicated that the horse’s racing pattern and light weight may allow him to use his natural speed and establish a favourable position early.
Soleil Fighter has limited experience at 1400 metres, with only four starts at the distance producing one third-place finish. However, his overall record at 1600 and 1800 metres suggests that the distance should not be regarded as an obvious obstacle.
The challenge will be the quality of opposition rather than simply the trip.
Hayes remains confident that there are more wins ahead for Soleil Fighter, particularly at Happy Valley, where the horse may find conditions more suitable. For now, though, Sunday’s assignment at Sha Tin represents a considerably tougher examination.
The Celebration Cup Handicap forms part of an 11-race programme at Sha Tin on Sunday, with the opening Class 5 Tropicbird Handicap over 1200 metres scheduled for 12.45pm.
