Jockey Leonel Reyes delivered a remarkable performance at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, riding five consecutive winners from Race 2 through Race 6 on a nine-race programme. The Leonel Reyes five-win streak became the defining feature of the afternoon as the 40-year-old rider produced a sustained run of success just one day after being involved in a spill.

Reyes launched his sequence aboard Wine Candy in Race 2 before continuing with Awesome Noah in Race 3. Lady Chance followed in Race 4, while Ciborio and Oxar completed the remarkable run in Races 5 and 6 respectively. Five successive victories placed Reyes firmly at the centre of the Gulfstream Park card.

Three of the five winners were trained by Jose D’Angelo. Awesome Noah, Ciborio and Oxar all carried D’Angelo’s training credentials, making the partnership between the trainer and Reyes a significant factor in the afternoon’s results.

Leonel Reyes Five-Win Streak Follows Saturday Spill

The achievement assumed greater significance because Reyes had been involved in a spill during Saturday’s sixth race. He was aboard Redhotnotbothered when the horse clipped heels with Smoke an a Pancake on the backstretch, sending the jockey to the ground.

Reyes was shaken up in the incident but walked away without injury. He subsequently took off his remaining three mounts on the programme. One of those horses, Miss Mary Nell, went on to capture the $100,000 Ginger Punch Handicap under Jonathan Ocasio.

Reyes returned to the saddle the following afternoon and responded with five straight victories. His performance showed a swift return to rhythm and concentration as he maintained his winning momentum across five consecutive races.

The sequence ended in Race 7, where Reyes finished third aboard Paris Surprise. Despite that result ending his run, the five victories had already established the major storyline of the programme.

The latest achievement also followed another productive afternoon for Reyes at Gulfstream Park. On July 11, he recorded five victories, including four consecutive wins. His Sunday performance therefore added another impressive chapter to his record at the South Florida track.

Reyes came close to a notable track record during his latest run. The record for consecutive victories at Gulfstream Park remained seven, a mark established by Irad Ortiz Jr. on February 3, 2023.

Gulfstream Park Produces More Standout Performances

While Reyes dominated the middle portion of the programme, Diego Herrera also enjoyed a productive afternoon with a double. Herrera guided High Lateen to victory in Race 7 before completing his brace aboard Getaholdayourself in Race 9.

Herrera was honoured following Race 7 after securing the riding title during the Royal Palm Meet. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and owner Bruno Schickedanz were also recognised after leading their respective standings during the meeting.

The nine-race card therefore produced several notable achievements, but Reyes’ five consecutive victories remained the afternoon’s most prominent result. His sequence was particularly noteworthy given the circumstances surrounding his return after Saturday’s spill.

The Fall Sunshine Meet was scheduled to resume on Friday with another nine-race programme beginning at 12:20 p.m. The eighth race was set to be the feature, with an open allowance contest for fillies and mares aged three and older over six furlongs on the main track.

The field included stakes-placed Dakota’s Lil Auror, Love Like Lucy and Vita Mia, providing a competitive feature for the next programme.

For Reyes, however, Sunday’s card was defined by his five-race winning sequence. From Wine Candy in Race 2 to Oxar in Race 6, he maintained an unbroken run of winners before finishing third in the following race.

The Leonel Reyes five-win streak gave the Gulfstream Park programme a standout headline and underlined the rider’s ability to produce a sustained winning performance at the track. Coming immediately after his Saturday spill, the achievement also marked a strong return to action for the experienced jockey.

Leonel Reyes recorded five consecutive victories at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, winning Races 2 through 6 before finishing third aboard Paris Surprise in Race 7.
