Richard Kingscote will add South Korea to an already extensive international riding career on Sunday when he partners Gorgeous Win for trainer Danny Shum in the Group Three Korea Sprint at Seoul.

Korea Sprint 2026

The 1200-metre contest on Seoul’s sand track presents a fresh challenge for both horse and rider. Kingscote, an Epsom Derby-winning jockey who completed his first full Hong Kong season in 2025-26, has previously ridden in countries including Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, France and Bahrain, but this will be his first competitive appearance in South Korea.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Kingscote said. “It’s nice to be asked – it’s a place I’ve not been to ride yet, and I’ve been lucky to ride in a lot of places.”

His mount, Gorgeous Win, forms part of a three-horse Hong Kong challenge alongside Beauty Waves and last year’s winner Self Improvement.

Self Improvement became only the second Hong Kong-trained winner of the Korea Sprint when successful in 2025, following Super Jockey’s victory in the inaugural running in 2016. Beauty Waves, meanwhile, brings Group Three-winning form into this year’s renewal.

Gorgeous Win Faces A Different Test

Gorgeous Win arrives in Seoul with six victories from 36 starts and a rating of 86. The six-year-old son of Press Statement has won in Class 2 company on both turf and dirt in Hong Kong, although his experience on the latter surface remains limited.

His two appearances on Sha Tin’s dirt include a victory last December, giving connections encouragement as he prepares for the unfamiliar conditions in Korea.

“The horse goes on the dirt here,” Kingscote said. “It’s a different surface for him in South Korea, but he’s a nice, big powerful horse.”

Gorgeous Win completed his final barrier-trial preparation at Sha Tin on August 21, finishing ninth on rain-affected dirt in 1min 13.42sec under Kingscote.

The jockey believes that effort should bring the gelding forward.

“I’ve done a bit of trackwork with him – he’s very well within himself,” Kingscote said. “He’ll come forward for that trial; as we know with all of the rain here the track probably wasn’t to his liking that day, but he’s fresh.”

Reports from Seoul since the horse’s arrival have also been encouraging.

“I’ve seen videos of him in South Korea and they’re happy with him,” Kingscote added. “Fingers crossed for a solid run.”

Seoul Surface Adds To The Unknowns

The Korea Sprint 2026 will require Gorgeous Win to cope with several elements he does not encounter regularly in Hong Kong.

Seoul’s sand surface is markedly different from Sha Tin’s dirt, while the deeper kickback can test horses racing behind rivals. Gorgeous Win must also adapt to travelling left-handed.

Kingscote is under no illusions about the scale of that adjustment.

“There’s lots of unknowns for a horse like him – he wouldn’t have travelled a great deal, he’s on a new surface and he’s racing in the opposite direction,” he said.

The jockey, however, believes Gorgeous Win’s physique and temperament give him a chance of handling the change.

“He’s a hardy horse and Danny obviously knows what it takes to travel a horse, and he feels that he’s the sort of horse who can do it – it’s a nice opportunity.”

Shum has considerable experience campaigning horses internationally, an important factor as Gorgeous Win tackles one of the most distinctive sprinting assignments on the Asian calendar.

Hong Kong Sends Three To Seoul

Hong Kong’s representation extends beyond Gorgeous Win, with Beauty Waves and Self Improvement providing further strength to the visiting team.

Beauty Waves arrived in South Korea after travelling from Hong Kong on August 25 alongside Self Improvement and Gorgeous Win. He is seeking to become the third Hong Kong-trained horse to win the race.

Japan is represented by Dragon Welds and American Stage.

American Stage brings particularly strong international form. He finished fourth in the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Sprint before taking sixth in the Dubai Golden Shaheen earlier this year, giving the Japanese challenge experience at the highest level.

The home team, meanwhile, includes Vincero Cavallo, Born Dia and Winner Clear.

The three supplied the first three home in the Group Two SROA Chairman’s Sprint over the same 1200-metre Seoul course on May 17. Born Dia led the way that afternoon, defeating Winner Clear, with 12-time winner Vincero Cavallo finishing third.

That established local form provides an intriguing contrast to the international runners, several of whom will be encountering Seoul’s distinctive surface for the first time.

For Gorgeous Win, the assignment is also a step beyond his usual programme. His ability on Sha Tin dirt gives Shum and Kingscote something on which to build, but adapting that form to deeper sand, a different direction of travel and international company will ultimately determine his prospects.

Kingscote has spent much of his career embracing opportunities beyond his home circuit. Seoul now becomes the latest addition to that journey, and Gorgeous Win gives him his first chance to make an impression in South Korean racing.
