Goodwood staged an action-packed six-race Flat meeting on Friday, August 28, with a varied programme covering sprinting, middle-distance and staying contests. The card brought together maiden performers, fillies’ events, handicaps and an amateur jockeys’ contest, providing plenty of competition across the afternoon and evening.
The meeting began at 4:35pm with the EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over six furlongs before moving through progressively longer distances. The day’s most valuable contest was among the feature events, while the concluding Kindersley Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes brought the programme to a close at 7:28pm.
The opening race, the EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Class 3), was contested over six furlongs. The race was designed for fillies seeking their first success and provided an early opportunity for several promising young performers to gain valuable experience.
Gobby Grace (IRE) came out on top, with Hector Crouch in the saddle. The result gave the filly an encouraging start and highlighted the importance of pace and positioning over Goodwood’s six-furlong course.
The second race was the White & Brooks Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (Class 5) at 1 mile, 1 furlong and 202 yards. The longer trip required greater stamina and tactical judgement from the field.
Alice de Clare (IRE) emerged as the winner, partnered by Jonny Peate. The performance marked a strong showing over the extended distance and provided one of the afternoon’s notable results.
At 5:45pm, Goodwood hosted the A Good Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (Class 4), a race run over 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 3 yards. The contest presented a significant stamina challenge compared with the earlier races.
Kelly Burn secured the victory under Ashley Lewis. The winning performance demonstrated the ability to maintain a strong gallop over a demanding middle-distance trip.
The fourth race, the Daily Extra Places Handicap Stakes (Class 4), returned to sprinting with a five-furlong contest.
Velvet Goldmine (IRE) was successful with Kieran Shoemark aboard. The result added another sprint victory to an already varied card, with the short distance placing particular emphasis on a fast start and efficient use of the course.
Kieran Shoemark completed another successful ride in the fifth race, the Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over six furlongs.
Sound And Vision (IRE) took the honours in the 6:55pm contest. The victory gave Shoemark a second winning ride of the meeting and provided another highlight during the evening portion of the card.
The final race of the day was the Kindersley Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over 1 mile, 1 furlong and 18 yards. The race featured amateur riders and brought a different dimension to the Goodwood programme.
Beach Point (IRE) finished as the winner, with Mr Henry Callan riding. The concluding result rounded off an entertaining six-race meeting and brought the curtain down on Friday’s action.
Friday’s Goodwood programme offered a broad mix of racing, ranging from the speed required in the five- and six-furlong contests to the stamina demands of the races beyond a mile. The meeting also showcased both professional and amateur riders.
Gobby Grace provided the opening success, while Alice de Clare and Kelly Burn delivered victories over longer distances. Velvet Goldmine and Sound And Vision then brought the focus back to sprinting before Beach Point completed the day’s results in the amateur jockeys’ contest.
With six races spread across almost three hours, the meeting provided a balanced programme and several noteworthy individual performances. The results will offer useful form references for the horses as they progress to their next assignments, while the jockey performances added further interest to a competitive Goodwood card.
