Powell River Returns for Toronto Cup at Woodbine Racetrack

Powell River set for the Toronto Cup Stakes at Woodbine

Seven three-year-olds will line up at Woodbine on Saturday for the $125,000 Toronto Cup Stakes, with Powell River among the leading contenders as the Chiefswood Stables homebred returns to turf for the first time since the opening start of a promising campaign.

Trained by Katerina Vassilieva, Powell River will make the fifth start of a career that has already taken him from Gulfstream and Churchill Downs to Woodbine. The one-mile Toronto Cup will be his first appearance on Woodbine’s inner turf, a surface expected to suit a colt who has shown considerable ability on grass.

Powell River, by Justify out of Niigon’s Eclipse, a daughter of Chiefswood’s 2004 King’s Plate winner Niigon, began his racing career without a start at two. His debut came at Gulfstream in early March, where he finished second over 7½ furlongs.

He followed that effort with another runner-up finish on May 1, this time over a mile on the Churchill Downs turf. Those two performances established him as a horse with plenty of promise, despite having little racing experience.

The colt then headed north to Woodbine for a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on June 14. He showed determination throughout the seven-horse contest, taking an early advantage before surrendering the lead and later regaining it. Powell River pulled clear in the closing stages to win by 1½ lengths in 1:45.04.

That victory earned him a place in the Plate Trial on July 19, where he made his first stakes appearance. The result did not go his way, but the experience provided another step in his development as he continued along the King’s Plate route.

A return to grass now offers a different test. Powell River has already demonstrated that he can handle Woodbine’s Tapeta, but his earlier turf efforts suggest that the inner course and one-mile distance could bring out another side of his ability.

Vassilieva has enjoyed a strong season, recording 14 wins, eight seconds and five thirds from 53 starts in 2026. Her stable will be hoping Powell River can add another significant result to that record when the Toronto Cup field heads onto the turf.

For Chiefswood Stables, the race also carries the appeal of a homebred with an accomplished family behind him. The Toronto Cup will provide a useful measure of how far Powell River has progressed since those encouraging early-season efforts.

The mile should give the colt an opportunity to settle into his rhythm while testing whether his turf form can translate into stakes success at Woodbine. With six rivals standing in his way, Saturday’s contest promises to offer an important next chapter in Powell River’s three-year-old campaign.
