Archivist produced a determined performance at Goodwood on Friday to overcome a demanding weight burden and land the Coral Golden Mile, giving trainer Hamad Al Jehani and Wathnan Racing a memorable success during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Carrying joint top weight with a rating of 105, Archivist travelled smoothly throughout the mile contest before making his challenge in the straight. Ridden by Callum Rodriguez, the six-year-old avoided much of the interference that affected several rivals and finished strongly to secure victory.

The race developed into a closely fought affair, with several runners encountering difficult passages during the contest. Rodriguez kept Archivist on a wide but trouble-free route, allowing the horse to build momentum before producing a decisive run in the closing stages.
Cerulean Bay finished second, beaten by just over a length, while Classic stayed on to take third by a narrow margin. Ancient Rome completed the first four home.
Archivist had previously impressed when winning a handicap at Meydan in March, but his return to European action at Royal Ascot proved disappointing when he finished 20th as favourite in the Royal Hunt Cup. The Goodwood success marked a strong return to form and underlined his ability at the distance.
The victory was particularly significant for Al Jehani, who has enjoyed an outstanding season with his stable. Archivist’s performance added another major result to Wathnan Racing’s Qatar Goodwood Festival campaign and highlighted the team’s preparation and planning.
Rodriguez’s ride was also central to the result. From a wide starting position, the jockey kept the horse balanced and settled before delivering his challenge at the right moment. Archivist’s high energy and strong finishing ability proved valuable over Goodwood’s straight mile.
Cerulean Bay, trained by David O’Meara, produced another excellent effort despite returning to action only days after his previous run. The four-year-old travelled well and stayed on strongly but found one rival too good on the day.
Classic also earned praise after finishing third, with the quicker ground and lack of a clear passage preventing him from showing his full potential late in the race.
The Coral Golden Mile added another important chapter to Archivist’s career and provided a standout moment for connections at one of the major summer racing festivals.
