American Affair returned to winning form with a determined performance in the G2 King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood, producing a late surge to claim victory in one of the season’s most closely fought five-furlong contests.
Trained by Jim Goldie and ridden by Paul Mulrennan, the six-year-old raced prominently on the stands’ side after the field split into two groups during the race. Asfoora travelled strongly on the far side alongside Rumstar and Time For Sandals, setting up a thrilling finish with all four contenders fighting for position inside the final furlong.

As the runners approached the line, American Affair showed the strongest finishing speed to score by half a length from Rumstar. Time For Sandals finished another neck away in third, while Australian mare Asfoora was narrowly denied a place, finishing fourth by the same margin.
The victory marked American Affair’s first success since his Group 1 triumph in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2025. An injury kept him away from competition for the remainder of that campaign, but his return to top form has strengthened hopes for another major target later this season.
Goldie’s stable star had previously shaped well at York, and the return to Goodwood’s sharp five-furlong track proved ideal. The performance also highlighted the horse’s continued improvement with age and experience.
The next objectives for American Affair are expected to include the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, with a possible move towards further Group-level challenges later in the year.
Runner-up Rumstar produced another excellent effort, confirming his ability at the highest level. The six-year-old travelled smoothly throughout and continued his consistent record in major sprint contests. His connections indicated that further Group 1 opportunities remain on the agenda.
Time For Sandals also bounced back to form with a strong finish after a difficult season. The mare settled well and stayed on powerfully in the closing stages, while Asfoora once again showed her class despite being left without a rival alongside her during the decisive part of the race.
The result was another memorable moment for the Goldie team and the owners of American Affair, who have watched the horse progress from an uncertain early career into a leading sprint performer.
American Affair’s victory adds another significant achievement to his record and places him among the leading contenders for the major sprint prizes still to come this season.
