The historic Galway Racecourse will prepare to stage another high-quality afternoon of Irish horse racing on Saturday, 1 August, with an eight-race programme combining competitive hurdle contests and flat races. The meeting will begin at 14:02 and conclude at 18:05, with almost €300,000 in total prize money on offer. Headlined by a valuable Listed hurdle and supported by competitive handicaps and maiden events, the card will attract leading trainers, jockeys and emerging talent from across Ireland and Britain.
Opening the afternoon, THE MAIDEN HURDLE will start at 14:02 over 2m 175yds for a prize fund of €17,000. The opening contest will feature several promising jumpers, including Atlantic Gamble, who will represent trainer Paul John Gilligan with P.T. Enright in the saddle. Columbus, trained by W.P. Mullins and partnered by P. Townend, will also be among the expected runners, while Godsend, from the Cian Collins yard under B.W. Harvey, will add further strength to the field alongside several other maiden hurdlers.
Attention will then turn to THE GALWAY TRIBES HANDICAP HURDLE, which will be run at 14:37 over 2m 175yds with a valuable €80,000 purse. Path D’oroux, trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by K.M. Donoghue, will head a competitive line-up. Putapoundinthejar, representing A.J. Martin with C. Stone-Walsh aboard, and Paul’s Dream, from the Anthony Mullins stable under D.E. Mullins, will also feature among the expected runners in what will be one of the afternoon’s most competitive handicap hurdles.
The highlight of the jumping programme will arrive at 15:12 with THE HANDICAP HURDLE (LISTED) over 2m 6f 108yds for an impressive €110,000. As the richest race on the card, the Listed contest will bring together proven staying hurdlers. American Mike, prepared by Olly Murphy and partnered by J.H. Williamson, will take on Pinot Gris, trained by Henry de Bromhead and ridden by D.J. O’Keeffe, while several other accomplished performers will complete a quality field.
Flat racing will continue with THE IRISH EBF MARES FLAT RACE at 15:52, covering 2m 175yds for €17,000. Aodha’s Arrow, representing James Joseph Mangan with J.L. Gleeson, will line up alongside Back In Favour, trained by Anthony McCann and partnered by A.B. O’Connor, with further promising mares expected to contest the race.
The afternoon’s fifth event, THE IRISH EBF MAIDEN, will be staged at 16:27 over 1m 73yds with €22,000 on offer. Roy Bean, from the Noel Meade stable under A. Caffrey, will face Thomas Chippendale, who will represent A.P. O’Brien with J. Cleary aboard. The maiden contest will also include several lightly raced runners looking to make their mark.
Momentum will continue with THE MAIDEN, scheduled for 17:00 over 1m 73yds for a purse of €17,000. Desert Swing, trained by Andrew Kinirons and ridden by R.C. Colgan, will feature among the leading names, while Romantic War, representing J.G. Murray under R. Donaghue-Leahy, will also take part together with several other developing performers.
The penultimate race, THE HANDICAP, will be contested at 17:35 over 7f with prize money of €17,000. Apache Outlaw, from the Adrian McGuinness stable with A. Caffrey aboard, will line up alongside Marta’s Prince, trained by R.P. Burns and partnered by J.J.G. Ryan, while a large supporting field will ensure another competitive handicap.
Bringing the meeting to a close, THE CAPITAL INVESTMENTS HANDICAP will be run at 18:05 over 1m 3f 180yds for €18,000. Ivatt, trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by C.D. Hayes, will be among the principal contenders, while Brosna Town, representing Jessica Bedi with D.P. McDonogh in the saddle, will also feature alongside several other handicap runners.
