Nick Tomlinson spent years visiting the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle while working as assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse. Now, after stepping out on his own, the 32-year-old Toronto native is creating his own identity as a trainer and enjoying a promising start to his independent career.

Within nine months of establishing his own stable, Tomlinson has made a notable impression at Gulfstream Park, producing a consistent run of winners during the Royal Palm Meet. His progress has been built on experience gained from some of the most respected names in the sport, along with a careful approach to managing horses.

Nick Tomlinson trainer profile has attracted attention as the young horseman continues to develop his training career after years of working behind the scenes with leading operations.

Tomlinson’s first season as a standalone trainer has brought encouraging results. During the 2025-2026 Championship Meet, he recorded six victories from 32 starters, showing his ability to compete effectively while establishing a new stable.

His success has come through a combination of strong planning, suitable race placement and close attention to the individual needs of each horse. Supported by a growing group of owners and a dedicated team, Tomlinson has steadily expanded his operation since taking the decision to work independently.

The early stages of his journey were not without challenges. Tomlinson began his stable last autumn with only two horses and registered his first victory on October 31 when Insolenta produced a dominant 10¼-length success. However, the victory was followed by a difficult moment as the mare left his stable soon after, reducing his string to just one horse.

A significant opportunity arrived through Dennis Amaty of Amaty Racing Stables, which helped Tomlinson strengthen his operation. The partnership allowed him to increase the number of horses under his care and continue developing his training methods.

Tomlinson’s connection with racing began during his childhood near Woodbine, where his father worked on the gate crew. By the age of 13, he had already started spending time around the backstretch, gaining an early understanding of stable life.

After completing school, he continued working in racing, beginning as a hot walker before moving into assistant roles. His early experience included working with trainer Peter Berringer at Woodbine and later joining Malcolm and Sally Pierce’s stable, where he travelled with horses and gained valuable knowledge of training operations.

Those experiences eventually led him to the stable of Mark Casse, where Tomlinson worked with high-quality Thoroughbreds and learned the importance of making confident decisions while handling horses.

The lessons from his years with established trainers have played an important role in shaping his own approach. Tomlinson has carried forward a patient style of training, focusing on individual requirements rather than following a fixed routine for every horse.

In July, Tomlinson achieved another important milestone by securing his first stakes success with Watson in the Proud Man. The victory further strengthened his reputation and marked another step forward in his growing career.

Today, Tomlinson manages a stable of around 20 horses at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s training facility in Palm Beach County. His operation continues to grow while maintaining the personal attention that has become central to his training philosophy.

The young trainer believes that a positive environment and careful handling are key elements in bringing out the best in horses. With a foundation built through years of experience and a growing list of achievements, Tomlinson’s journey represents one of the emerging stories in North American racing.
