King Khalid Racecourse will stage a significant weekend of Arabian racing action as promising contenders return to the track for key preparatory contests ahead of next month’s major fixtures. The SAR120,000 Taif Arabian Derby Prep on Saturday has attracted a strong field of 18 runners, with lightly raced four-year-old Gista (FR) among those looking to make an early impression.

Taif Arabian Derby Prep racecard features Gista as one of the leading contenders in the 2000m contest.

Trained by Musa Almosa, Gista arrives with encouraging credentials after registering two victories at King Khalid Racecourse last season over shorter distances. The four-year-old has already shown the ability to handle extended trips, finishing fourth in the Al-Mneefah Qualifier over slightly further in Riyadh in January, suggesting the 2000m journey should not present a major concern.

Gista will face a strong challenge from Nawaf Goodah (KSA), prepared by Abdulrahman Alfarhan. The six-start performer recorded his only career success over this distance in Riyadh last November and will renew rivalry with Gista as both horses prepare for the SAR350,000 Taif Arabian Derby scheduled for August 22.

Another notable runner in the Derby Prep is Tuwajeri (IRE), representing jockey Mohammad Alhubail, trainer Abdullah Alsidrani and owner Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Alsabah. The colt enters the race with a strong profile, having won twice in minor company last season before finishing second to Al Haram (IRE) in the 2000 Guineas and later sixth behind the same stable companion in the Saudi Derby.

The Taif Derby Prep is expected to provide valuable clues ahead of the upcoming championship event, with several young horses aiming to establish their credentials on the Taif stage.

The Taif University Cup Prep over 1400m for older horses is another important trial on Saturday’s programme. Jahdoon (KSA), representing the Red Stable of Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz, holds strong claims after producing four consecutive victories last season before ending his campaign with a second-place finish in the Ministry of Media Cup.

First Line (KSA) could prove a serious contender for trainer Bassim Almousa if returning in peak condition after a 12-month absence, while last week’s Shubra Cup Prep Open winner adds further depth to the field in the colours of Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Alsabah.

Race eight on Saturday, a Local Bred Fillies Open over 1600m, has attracted a quality group of runners. The White Stable of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz will be represented by Aeadat (KSA), who completed a remarkable sequence of 10 straight victories before scoring at this venue last September. Stablemate Fallat Kheir (KSA) also brings valuable experience after finishing fifth in the Asian Racing Federation Cup on Saudi Cup day under Oisin Murphy.

The third race on Saturday will see Arabian horses return over 1200m, with familiar rivals Baseq And Bake (USA) and Jade De Faust (FR) among the 13 runners expected to renew their rivalry.

Friday’s programme will also feature an important preparation race, with the Makkah Almokarramah Regional Government Cup Prep Open over 1600m serving as the day’s main attraction. Abdullah Alsidrani has a strong representation with three runners in the Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Alsabah colours, including Final Destination (GB), who was last seen finishing behind Michael Scofield (USA), ridden by Oisin Murphy, in the Listed Tuwaiq Cup.

The White Stable will also bring back one of its leading performers on Friday, with Jeddah Beach (USA) returning in race eight. The four-year-old filly faces 17 rivals in the 1400m Open contest and will make her first appearance since finishing second in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint Qualifier in January.

With several established performers returning alongside emerging talents, the weekend fixtures at King Khalid Racecourse will offer an important guide towards the major Arabian racing targets ahead.
