Humormeastory produced a devastating late run to deny favourite Wine After Whiskey and capture Sunday’s $150,000 Lake Superior Stakes at Woodbine, announcing himself as one of the most promising Ontario-sired three-year-old sprinters. The grey gelding came from the back of the field to secure his first stakes victory in only his third career start.
Humormeastory Wins Lake Superior Stakes
Run over six furlongs on the main track, the race developed at a strong early tempo as Quadzilla led the field through the opening stages before Wine After Whiskey moved alongside and took a narrow advantage after a half-mile in 46.12 seconds.
As the leaders battled in front, Humormeastory was once again forced to overcome a slow beginning, trailing all 10 runners after the opening quarter-mile. Under a patient ride, the Patrick Dixon-trained gelding gradually improved around the turn before being switched wide entering the home straight.
Wine After Whiskey appeared set for victory after opening a clear lead inside the final furlong, but Humormeastory produced an explosive finishing burst down the centre of the track. Sweeping past in the closing strides, he crossed the line half a length in front, stopping the clock in 1:11.01.
Wine After Whiskey finished second, while Auntie’s Bambino completed the placings in third ahead of Gone With Duwyn. Pepper Brooks was scratched before the race.
The victory marked Humormeastory’s second consecutive success after breaking his maiden at Woodbine earlier this month. Unraced at two, the son of Frac Daddy has made rapid progress this season, improving his career record to two wins and one third from just three starts.
Bred and owned by John Brnjas’ Colebrook Farms, Humormeastory has quickly established himself as a horse with significant upside. His latest performance suggested his powerful closing style could prove equally effective over longer distances as his career continues to develop.
