Providing a competitive afternoon’s action, Pontefract Racecourse staged a seven-race programme on Sunday, 26 July, featuring maiden races, handicaps and a Listed contest. Rowan Scott recorded riding doubles, while Holloway Boy secured the feature race in a meeting that produced competitive finishes across every class.
Opening the afternoon’s programme, the Malcolm Prescott 80th Birthday Maiden Stakes (Class 4) (GBB Race) was won by ASSET, who gave trainer Sir Mark Prescott Bt an impressive success under Luke Morris for owners Gestuet Schlenderhan Gmbh U. Co. Kg. The winner completed the mile in 1m 46.02s, with ALBEMAGIC finishing second and FELIZ NAVIDAD taking third.
The early momentum continued in the British EBF Stallion Studs Maiden Stakes (Class 4) (GBB Race), where BOLT OF BLUE provided Billy Loughnane with the first of his victories. Trained by Ed Dunlop for owner Mr Paul McEwen, the winner stopped the clock in 1m 02.54s, ahead of THE MEAN FIDDLER, while ONSLAUGHT completed the top three.
Attention then switched to the handicap action in the Trevor Woods Memorial Handicap Stakes (Class 5), where POLYGRAM delivered Rowan Scott’s first winner of the afternoon. Trained by Tristan Davidson for owner Mr Hugh Brunton, the winner recorded 1m 42.51s, with MOUNT KING finishing second and BRADBURY taking third.
The feature contest of the meeting came in the Pomfret Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race), where HOLLOWAY BOY produced a polished performance under Clifford Lee. Trained by K. R. Burke for owners N White, S White, T White & E Burke, the winner completed the race in 1m 40.36s, finishing ahead of POINT LYNAS, while MOSTAR DREAMS claimed third place.
Staying performers then took centre stage in the Pontefract and District Golf Club Ltd Handicap Stakes (Class 3) (GBBPLUS Race), where JEZ BOMB completed Rowan Scott’s riding double. Trained by Sam England for owners A & J Birch, the winner covered the distance in 2m 09.81s, with WITHOUT COMPROMISE taking second and POMME POMME finishing third.
The penultimate contest produced another competitive finish in the Roy Winstanley Memorial Raising Encephalitis Awareness Handicap Stakes (Class 6), where GO VICTOR provided Billy Garritty with victory for trainers Tony Culhane & Stella Barclay. Racing for Carswell & Stella Barclay Racing Club, the winner recorded 1m 15.23s, ahead of STARSONG, while BATTENBURG BELLE completed the placings.
Bringing the meeting to a close, the Sarah Gusterson Memorial Handicap Stakes (Class 4) saw THE GOOD BISCUIT hand Jason Hart as a winner of the afternoon. Trained by Ruth Carr for owners Miss Vanessa Church & Mr Toby Brereton, the winner stopped the clock in 1m 14.51s, with BELL SHOT finishing second and IRIS DANCER taking third.
The seven-race fixture delivered competitive racing from start to finish, with Holloway Boy’s Listed success providing the feature performance. Riding double for Rowan Scott further highlighted an afternoon that featured notable displays across maiden, handicap and Listed company.
