Basel Cosmopolitans produced one of the most remarkable recoveries of the 2026 Global Champions League season, overturning an overnight deficit to secure their first-ever team title at Stage 9 in Riesenbeck. A faultless second-round display transformed the standings, with the team climbing from ninth after the opening round to lift the trophy in dramatic fashion.
The first Global Champions League event following the mid-season transfer window lived up to expectations, with new rider combinations, shifting momentum and costly mistakes reshaping the championship battle throughout the day.
Basel Cosmopolitans, powered by Les Trois Rois, entered the decisive round carrying eight penalties after Nicola Philippaerts’ rail in Round 1. With little margin for error, Marlon Modolo Zanotelli and Ilex delivered a polished clear round before Zascha Nygaard completed the turnaround aboard Com’On Drako de Maugre with another fault-free effort.
Their combined second-round time of 144.70 seconds proved unbeatable, earning Basel their maiden GCL victory and one of the biggest comebacks seen this season.
Speaking afterwards, Zanotelli admitted the outcome had exceeded expectations.
“We’re very, very happy. It was a bit unexpected, to be honest, but we tried to put the pressure on and it worked out today. Every rider and every horse has to do their job, and today everyone delivered.”
Looking ahead to the championship race, he added that the contest had been wide open from the opening stage and expressed confidence that Basel could continue challenging if they maintained their current form.
Nygaard also praised team manager Andreas Schou for his role behind the scenes, saying his guidance throughout the competition had helped riders perform at their best.
Istanbul Warriors, who had been the only team to record a double clear in the opening round, appeared firmly in control heading into the final phase. However, pressure mounted in Round 2 as Abdel Saïd incurred a rail aboard Wathnan Max before Henrik von Eckermann also collected four faults with Qasirah van de Reistenhoek.
Those mistakes left Istanbul with eight penalties overall, enough for second place but insufficient to deny Basel’s charge.
Von Eckermann reflected on the missed opportunity, explaining that after seeing Basel’s pace he opted for a cautious approach rather than risking an aggressive ride, but the plan ultimately did not pay off.
Abdel Saïd was nevertheless encouraged by the performance of his relatively inexperienced mount, believing the horse had responded well to the challenge and would continue to improve as the season progresses.
Doha Falcons completed the podium after another consistent team effort.
Sanne Thijssen delivered consecutive clear rounds aboard Joviality, while Caroline Rehoff Pedersen guided Polonis L home despite collecting ten penalties. Their combined total of 14 penalties secured third place and valuable championship points.
Thijssen highlighted the importance of teamwork within the Global Champions League, saying the ability to exchange ideas and support one another remained one of the competition’s greatest strengths.
The reverse-order format again proved decisive as several leading teams failed to capitalise on strong opening performances.
Prague Lions, who had begun the second round in second place, slipped down the order after Anna Kellnerová and Kristalline des Bergeries accumulated 19 penalties before Fernando Martinez Sommer added four faults aboard Joep.
St Tropez Pirates also surrendered their podium position after Jeanne Sadran and Jérôme Guery combined for 20 penalties despite Antoine Ermann’s excellent first-round performance.
Elsewhere, New York Empire climbed to fourth following solid rounds from Bertram Allen and Scott Brash, while Madrid In Motion finished fifth, thanks largely to Victor Bettendorf’s fastest clear round of the afternoon aboard Qwando van de Rispen in 68.30 seconds.
Cairo Pharaohs claimed sixth ahead of Riyadh Knights, with Monaco Aces, St Tropez Pirates and Prague Lions completing the top ten.
The GCL Riesenbeck Stage 9 results have significantly tightened the championship standings after several title contenders missed out on valuable points.
Despite their victory, Basel remain second overall behind Riesenbeck International, although the gap has narrowed considerably heading into Stage 10.
