Opening the afternoon programme, The Cumbria Grand Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) (GBB Race) will be contested at 1:42pm over 2m 1f 46y for £10,000 in prize money. Nine runners are expected to go to post, including Destination Unkown, Gambino, Kind of Kiss, Masekela, Scopic and Speed For Fun. The opening contest will provide lightly raced hurdlers with an opportunity to register a maiden success and begin the meeting on a competitive note.
The action will continue at 2:12pm with The Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) (Division I) over 2m 6f 31y, carrying a purse of £6,550. Present Fair, Westerton, Secret Secret, Dusky Days, Poetry Man and Born Like Me headline the expected ten-runner field. The extended distance will place the emphasis on stamina as the runners tackle one of the longer hurdle races on the programme.
Next on the schedule, The Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) (Division II) will be staged at 2:42pm over the same 2m 6f 31y trip for £6,550. Fairlawn Skipper, Fourofakind, Lelantos, Les’s Destiny Star, Matoury and Top Flight Century are among the leading names entered. Like the opening division, this contest will provide another competitive staying handicap with a well-balanced field.
Midway through the card, The Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) will take place at 3:12pm over 2m 1f 46y with prize money of £6,550. Scots Poet, Big Gypsy King, Zamond, Raffles Nobu, Interchangeable and Assorda are expected to feature in the eight-runner contest. The shorter distance compared with the previous two races will offer a different test, placing greater emphasis on pace and jumping accuracy.
Attention will then turn to the larger obstacles at 3:42pm with The Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 4) (GBB Race) over 3m 1f 107y. Worth £9,450, the staying chase will bring together Stratagem, Red Happy, Sean Og, Le Malin and Slaney Opera. Although only five runners are set to line up, the demanding trip and Cartmel’s unique layout should ensure a closely contested race.
Taking centre stage on the programme, The Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 3) (GBB Race) will be run at 4:12pm over 2m 1f 61y for £12,750, making it the richest race of the afternoon. Dunkerque, Krak, Kientzheim, Heart Above and Passing Diamond are expected to contest the feature event, with the small but select field bringing together progressive novice chasers in the highest-class race on the card.
Bringing the meeting to a close, The Handicap Steeple Chase (Class 5) will be staged at 4:47pm over 2m 5f 34y for £7,250. Imperial Rule, Jack Sprat, El Muchacho, Wearelongterm, Kingofthegame and Judicial Review are among the expected runners in the ten-horse finale. The concluding contest will provide one final staying examination before the curtain falls on the day’s racing.
