The countdown to Canada’s most prestigious classic continues on Sunday as a field of 12 Canadian-bred three-year-olds lines up for the $200,000 Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine. The 1 1/8-mile contest serves as one of the final major stepping stones toward the King’s Plate on August 15, giving several emerging contenders an opportunity to strengthen their credentials.

Among the leading stories is Powell River, who makes his stakes debut after an encouraging maiden victory that suggested he could develop into a genuine King’s Plate prospect. Sunday’s race brings together several lightly raced but progressive runners, making it an important examination of both stamina and class.
Prepared by Katerina Vassilieva for owner-breeder Chiefswood Stables, Powell River is by Justify out of Niigon’s Eclipse, whose dam Niigon captured the King’s Plate in 2004. The pedigree has naturally raised expectations, but the colt has also begun to justify them on the racetrack.
Powell River broke his maiden over 1 1/16 miles at Woodbine on June 14 after displaying notable determination throughout the contest. He established an early advantage, came under sustained pressure down the backstretch, briefly surrendered the lead, and then responded strongly to regain control before drawing clear to score by one and a half lengths.
Vassilieva believes that performance revealed an important quality.
The trainer noted that Powell River never backed down despite racing under constant pressure through solid early fractions. Instead, he found more in the closing stages, suggesting he possesses the resilience required for longer-distance races.
Distance had once been considered a question mark after the colt dealt with throat issues earlier in his development, but every step up in trip has brought further improvement.
That confidence is also rooted in his earlier efforts in the United States. Unraced at two, Powell River finished second on debut over the turf at Gulfstream in March before producing another runner-up effort at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks weekend. Facing stronger company on both occasions, he exceeded expectations and continued to progress with experience.
His recent preparation has been equally encouraging. Powell River completed successive four-furlong workouts over Woodbine’s main track, clocking :47.40 on July 5 before returning with a maintenance move in :48.40 one week later. According to his trainer, the colt enters Sunday’s assignment fit, sound and mentally sharp.
The Plate Trial has long played an important role in identifying future King’s Plate contenders. The race has been won by many accomplished horses over the decades, while Hall of Fame jockey Avelino Gomez remains its most successful rider with nine victories. Trainer Gord McCann also captured the race nine times, and Mark Casse arrives seeking another success after winning three consecutive editions between 2022 and 2024.
This year’s renewal features a competitive mix of established maiden winners and improving prospects, ensuring the Plate Trial Stakes will once again provide valuable clues ahead of next month’s King’s Plate.
