Woodbine purse enhancements 2026 announced for Thoroughbred racing season

Woodbine Racetrack will offer significantly higher prize money for the remainder of its 2026 Thoroughbred season after Woodbine Entertainment, the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario (HBPA), and Ontario Racing announced a sweeping package of purse enhancements backed by new provincial funding.

The announcement marks one of the most substantial financial investments in Ontario Thoroughbred racing in recent years and follows the Government of Ontario’s decision in late June to provide an additional $35 million annually to the province’s horse racing industry under the fifth amendment to the Long-Term Funding Agreement.

Of that funding, $10 million has been directed to Ontario’s Thoroughbred sector. Half of the amount will be invested through Ontario Racing’s Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP) to strengthen Ontario Bred and Ontario Sired stakes, expand breeders’ awards, and encourage the breeding, development and racing of Thoroughbreds across the province.

A further $4.5 million from the TIP will be used to enhance racing opportunities at Woodbine Racetrack, including the purse increases unveiled this week.

Michael Copeland, Chief Executive Officer of Woodbine Entertainment, said the investment would provide meaningful support to participants while strengthening the province’s racing programme.

He said the additional funding would reinforce overnight racing, improve the stakes schedule and create more opportunities for Ontario Bred horses, benefiting owners and trainers while maintaining the high standard of competition at Woodbine.

Sue Leslie, President of the HBPA and a member of the TIP Committee, described the increases as an important step in encouraging greater investment in Ontario racing. She said stronger base purses would also lift Ontario Bred and Ontario Sired bonuses, providing further incentive for owners to purchase and race locally bred horses.

Because the funding was approved after the 2026 season had already begun, the full allocation will be distributed across the remainder of the current campaign.

Among the most notable changes, overnight purses for races carrying claiming prices of $25,000 and above will increase by 9 per cent, while races with claiming prices of $15,000 and below will receive a 3.5 per cent rise. Funding for the overall stakes programme will increase by 16 per cent through a combination of higher guaranteed purses and enhanced Ontario Bred bonuses.

The open stakes programme also receives a significant lift. Grade 2 races previously worth $175,000 will now carry $200,000, while Grade 3 contests rise from $150,000 to $175,000. Listed stakes increase from $100,000 to $125,000, and the prestigious Canadian-foaled juvenile races—the Cup & Saucer Stakes, Princess Elizabeth Stakes, and Coronation Futurity—will each be contested for $300,000, up from $250,000.

Woodbine will also introduce two new $125,000 sprint stakes during its autumn programme, with one restricted to three-year-olds and the other for three-year-old fillies.

Ontario’s marquee races will benefit from additional Ontario Bred bonuses through the TIP. The Woodbine Oaks, opening leg of the Triple Tiara, will now be run for $750,000, including a $250,000 Ontario Bred bonus. The Bison City Stakes and Wonder Where Stakes each increase to $350,000, while the Prince of Wales Stakes and Breeders’ Stakes, the second and third legs of the Canadian Triple Crown, will each offer $500,000, including $100,000 bonuses for eligible Ontario Breds.

Ontario Bred and Ontario Sired racing also receives a substantial boost. CTHS Sales Stakes Day will feature $1 million in purses across four stakes for the first time, with the Muskoka Stakes and Simcoe Stakes increasing to $300,000, while the Algoma Stakes and Elgin Stakes double to $200,000.

The Ontario Sired stakes series has also been strengthened, with purses rising from $100,000 to $150,000 for races including the Victorian Queen Stakes, Bull Page Stakes, South Ocean Stakes, Frost King Stakes, Eternal Search Stakes, Overskate Stakes, La Prevoyante Stakes and Steady Growth Stakes.

Additional funding will also raise purses for the remaining legs of the Ontario Sired Heritage Series to $150,000, covering races staged at both Woodbine Racetrack and Fort Erie Race Track.

The enhanced overnight purses will take effect with the next condition book, scheduled for release during the weekend of July 18, while the revised stakes purses begin with Woodbine’s Sunday, July 19 race meeting. The Woodbine purse enhancements 2026 package is expected to strengthen opportunities for horsemen throughout the second half of the season and reinforce Ontario’s position as one of North America’s leading Thoroughbred jurisdictions.
