Hong Kong trainers championship standings led by Caspar Fownes

The Hong Kong racing season has reached its final week with Caspar Fownes in command of the trainers’ championship, holding a six-win advantage over Danny Shum after months of pressure at the top of the table.

The Hong Kong trainers championship is now Fownes’ to lose.

With the season updated through the race meeting of July 8, 2026, Fownes leads the trainers’ standings with 69 wins from 562 runners. Shum remains his closest pursuer on 63 victories, while Mark Newnham, on 60, still has a narrow outside chance if results fall heavily in his favour across the final two fixtures.

The closing week brings two meetings — an 11-race card at Sha Tin on Sunday, July 12, and the nine-race season finale at Happy Valley on Wednesday, July 15. Fownes enters those fixtures with a useful cushion, but the final week in Hong Kong has rarely been short of drama, particularly when the premiership still has mathematical possibilities.

The top five in the current standings underline how competitive the 2025/26 season has been. Behind Fownes, Shum and Newnham, K W Lui sits fourth with 56 wins, while D A Hayes is fifth on 54. Although the championship race appears to have narrowed to the leading three, the broader table reflects the strength and depth of the Hong Kong training ranks.

Fownes has built his lead through consistency as much as momentum. His 69 winners have been backed by 43 seconds and 46 thirds, giving him a strong spread of results through the campaign. He also has HK$84,573,105 in stakes won, placing him among the leading performers by prize money as well as victories.

Shum, however, has not gone quietly. His 63 wins have come with a notably high prize-money return of HK$137,500,350, the highest among the current top five trainers. That figure reflects the quality of his season even if he now requires a strong late surge to seriously trouble Fownes at the summit.

Newnham, in third place, has also produced an outstanding campaign. The Australian trainer has 60 winners, 52 seconds and 50 thirds from 553 runners, along with HK$130,520,090 in stakes won. He remains within reach of Shum and, mathematically, not entirely out of the championship picture, though Fownes’ six-win advantage gives the leader clear breathing space.

For Fownes, Sunday’s Sha Tin card offers several chances to reinforce his position before the Happy Valley finale. Last-start winners Papaya Brose and Silver Spurs are among his key runners, with Papaya Brose stepping up in grade for the Class 3 Joy And Fun Handicap over 1200 metres. Silver Spurs, meanwhile, attempts to follow up in the second section of the Class 4 Victory Marvel Handicap over the same distance.

Daily Trophy, Sky Vino and Monarch County also bring solid recent form into their assignments, while Sagacious Life gives the stable added interest in the Class 1 Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy over 1600 metres.

Sagacious Life was third over the Sha Tin mile on June 6 in his first start for Fownes. A Brazilian Group 1 winner, he had already shown his effectiveness over the course and distance earlier in the season, and his presence gives Fownes a meaningful runner in one of the weekend’s feature contests.

Shum will also be represented in the Class 1 event through Helene Feeling, but his stronger weekend opportunities may come in other races. Packing Fighter has been close to breaking through in Hong Kong and looks well placed in the Class 4 Solar Hei Hei Handicap over 1600 metres. Massive Reward also shaped as a notable improver last time and returns in the Class 4 Medic Kingdom Handicap over 1400 metres.

Newnham, third in the table, needs a sharp final-week response to keep the Hong Kong trainers championship race alive. He has seven runners at Sha Tin on Sunday, with Lucky Sam Gor, a last-start winner, among his more prominent chances in the Class 3 Sight Winner Handicap over 1600 metres. Oldtown, who has been racing consistently, also lines up in the Victory Marvel Handicap.

The remaining two trainers in the top five, K W Lui and D A Hayes, may be out of reach of the title but remain significant figures in the final standings. Lui’s 56 winners have been supported by 66 third-place finishes, the highest third-place total among the top five. Hayes, with 54 wins from 659 runners, has the largest number of total runs among the leading group and has accumulated HK$132,967,415 in stakes won.

With only two meetings remaining, Fownes has put himself in the strongest position to secure a fifth Hong Kong trainers’ championship. Shum and Newnham have kept the contest alive deep into the season, but the leader’s recent control of the table means the pressure now sits firmly on those chasing him.

The final week should still provide a compelling finish. Fownes has the numbers, the lead and the runners to sharpen his advantage, but Hong Kong racing has enough late-season volatility to ensure the championship will not be formally settled until the final results are in.
