Catterick Bridge Racecourse staged an enjoyable afternoon of summer Flat racing on Thursday, 9 July, featuring six competitive contests that showcased experienced campaigners, promising juveniles and talented riders. The meeting produced several impressive performances, with jockeys David Allan and Rowan Scott each recording two winners during an entertaining programme.

From apprentice riders making their mark in the opening contest to a determined staying performance later in the afternoon, the meeting highlighted the competitive nature of racing at one of North Yorkshire’s best-known racecourses.
Pleasant summer weather greeted runners and spectators throughout the afternoon. Mild temperatures, light cloud cover and gentle winds created ideal conditions, while the racing surface remained consistent from the opening race to the finale.
Catterick Bridge Racecourse is among England’s oldest racecourses, with organised racing taking place for more than two centuries. Situated in North Yorkshire, the venue hosts both Flat and National Hunt fixtures and is known for its sharp, left-handed circuit that regularly produces exciting finishes. The racecourse continues to attract runners from leading northern stables throughout the season.
Routine watering was carried out before the meeting to maintain an even racing surface. The careful preparation ensured fair conditions for all six races despite the warm summer weather.
The afternoon began with the 2:00 PM Pinker’s Pond Apprentice Handicap (Class 6) over seven furlongs, where Classy Clarets (IRE) delivered a determined performance under Jack Nicholls. After settling comfortably during the early stages, the pair made smooth progress entering the closing furlong before finishing strongly to secure victory. The success rewarded a confident ride and continued the horse’s encouraging form over the distance.
Attention then turned to the 2:30 PM Download the Raceday Ready App Nursery Handicap (Class 6) over five furlongs. Penny Capri (IRE), partnered by Rowan Scott, produced an impressive display from the front. Showing excellent early speed, the youngster maintained a strong gallop throughout and held the advantage all the way to the finish, suggesting there is further improvement to come as the season progresses.
The 3:00 PM Racing TV Profits Returned to Racing Fillies’ Restricted Novice (Class 5) provided an opportunity for lightly raced fillies to demonstrate their potential. Warby, ridden by David Allan, made the most of the opportunity with a composed and professional performance. Travelling smoothly throughout the five-furlong contest, the filly responded well when challenged in the closing stages to record a well-deserved success and underline her promise for future assignments.
David Allan celebrated a second winner in the 3:30 PM All Races Live on Racing TV Handicap (Class 5) over seven furlongs as Beyond The Bar (IRE) produced another determined display. Positioned patiently during the opening stages, the horse quickened impressively in the final furlong to move clear and complete an excellent double for the experienced jockey.
The day’s longest contest came in the 4:00 PM Turmeric Challenge Trophy Handicap (Class 6) over one mile, seven furlongs and 201 yards. Sugarpiehoneybunch (IRE), partnered by Rhys Elliott, demonstrated impressive stamina in the closing stages. After being ridden patiently throughout much of the race, the horse finished powerfully to secure victory and confirm its ability over longer distances.
The meeting concluded with the 4:30 PM Racing Again 15th July Fillies’ Handicap (Class 5) over seven furlongs. Velvet Rhythm, ridden by Rowan Scott, delivered a polished performance to claim the final race of the afternoon. Travelling strongly before producing a decisive challenge inside the closing furlong, the filly crossed the line comfortably to give Rowan Scott his second winner of the meeting.
The six-race programme once again demonstrated the appeal of racing at Catterick Bridge, where competitive fields and well-prepared conditions combined to produce an entertaining afternoon. Apprentice riders gained valuable experience, promising young horses continued their development, and established performers added further victories to their records.
David Allan and Rowan Scott were the standout jockeys with two winners apiece, while Classy Clarets, Penny Capri, Warby, Beyond The Bar, Sugarpiehoneybunch and Velvet Rhythm all produced performances that will encourage their respective connections as the Flat season continues.
