Gulfstream Park’s sprint division returns to centre stage this weekend with the $100,000 Smile Sprint, where tactical positioning is expected to play a decisive role over six furlongs. The field brings together proven stakes performers and upwardly mobile contenders, all converging on a race that promises a tightly grouped finish.

Classic of Course, trained by Patrick Biancone, will break from the rail in what could prove to be a significant advantage for a horse that thrives when racing close to the inside fence. The Smile Sprint Gulfstream Park has drawn considerable attention due to the strength and balance of the line-up.

Biancone was quick to welcome the draw rather than view it as a complication, pointing to the gelding’s proven comfort when saving ground and travelling through traffic efficiently.

ā€œHe repeats every time the same race. We got a little bit unfortunate, I think, the last time because he had to go five wide on the turn and he got beat by a length. He just got tired the last 50 yards,ā€ the trainer said.

The four-year-old son of Awesome of Course has built a strong and consistent record at Gulfstream Park, earning more than $400,000 from 18 starts at the venue. His form line includes four victories, along with multiple placings that underline his reliability at this level.

Classic of Course is expected to adopt a stalking trip from the inside, a pattern that has previously brought him success when conditions align. Smile Sprint Gulfstream Park.

ā€œThis time we draw really well. We draw the ā€˜1’ and this horse loves to be on the inside. He won a couple of races like that, coming on the inside. It’s what he loves,ā€ Biancone added.

Keith Asmussen takes over in the saddle for the first time, partnering a runner currently positioned second in the morning line at 3-1 behind Rolando.

Rolando brings strong local credentials into the contest, having produced the bulk of his success at Gulfstream Park. The Fausto Gutierrez-trained colt has captured five of his six wins at the track and arrives with confidence following a narrow but determined success in the Big Drama Handicap.

In that most recent outing, Rolando travelled prominently before asserting late under Diego Herrera, confirming his effectiveness at this distance and venue.

Con Compania also enters with a solid profile, having previously finished behind Rolando before returning to winning form in a 6½-furlong allowance contest. The Bobby Dibona-trained runner showed a sharp finishing kick that day and remains firmly in the mix.

Guns Loaded represents a change of direction for connections, now under the care of Saffie Joseph Jr. The gelding, by Gun Runner, has shown flashes of ability, including a stakes victory earlier in his career, but will be looking to bounce back after a subdued seasonal return.

Viking makes his first start for David Fawkes after a break, while Naughty Rascal, Beach Colt and To the Eastside complete a field that offers little breathing room for error.

With several runners closely matched on figures and recent form, race positioning from the outset is likely to shape the final outcome, with minimal margins expected at the finish.
