Thirsk Racecourse hosts an entertaining afternoon of flat racing on Wednesday, 1 July, with an eight-race programme that brings together promising juveniles, competitive handicappers and experienced sprinters. The Yorkshire venue will stage contests across a variety of distances, offering opportunities for emerging talent and established performers alike.

The meeting gets underway at 1:08pm with the first division of the British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (Class 5) over six furlongs. Open to two-year-olds, the race carries prize money of £8,000 and provides young horses with an early opportunity to begin their racing careers. A second division follows at 1:38pm, giving another group of juveniles the chance to showcase their potential.

At 2:08pm, the British EBF Novice Stakes (Class 4) is run over 7 furlongs and 218 yards for three-year-olds and older horses. Worth £10,000, the contest is expected to feature lightly raced runners looking to gain valuable experience before progressing into stronger company.

The first handicap of the afternoon comes at 2:40pm with the Join Racing TV Today Handicap Stakes (Class 6) over six furlongs for horses rated 46-55. Closely matched ratings should ensure a competitive contest as runners seek another success during the summer season.

Three-year-old sprinters then take centre stage at 3:10pm in the Every Race Live on Racing TV Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over six furlongs. Carrying £7,500 in prize money, the race is open to horses rated 51-70 and offers improving performers an opportunity to continue their progression.

The meeting’s staying contest arrives at 3:40pm with the Weatherbys ePassport Handicap Stakes (Class 4) over 1 mile 4 furlongs and 8 yards. Restricted to three-year-olds rated 66-85, the £10,000 race is likely to attract progressive middle-distance horses capable of developing into useful stayers later in the campaign.

The highlight of the afternoon comes at 4:10pm with the Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap Stakes (Class 3) over six furlongs. Offering the day’s highest prize fund of £18,000, the feature race has assembled a competitive field of experienced sprinters and progressive handicap performers.

The line-up includes the top-rated runner from the Hamad Al Jehani stable representing Wathnan Racing, carrying a BHA rating of 90. David O’Meara saddles Veblen Good, a recent winner with a rating of 89, while Paul Midgley’s in-form Novello Lad also arrives with a rating of 89 after recording successive victories.

Richard and Peter Fahey are represented by Strong Warrior, who has shown encouraging recent form, while Julie Camacho’s Indian Run has been knocking on the door with a pair of runner-up finishes. Nigel Tinkler sends Lord Roxby, who won earlier this season before another solid effort on his latest start.

Kevin Ryan has a strong hand with American Style and the experienced Bergerac, while Grant Tuer’s Westmorian returns in search of improved form. Veteran campaigner Juan Les Pins, trained by Michael Appleby, has been remarkably consistent in recent outings and could once again play a prominent role. Tim Easterby’s Mister Sox completes the field after a creditable placed effort last time.

With proven course performers, recent winners and consistent sprinters all lining up, the feature handicap promises to be one of the most competitive races on the card. The combination of established Class 3 performers and improving handicappers should produce an exciting finish on Thirsk’s straight six-furlong course.

The meeting concludes at 4:40pm with the William Hill Summer Cup Saturday 1st August Book Now Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over seven furlongs. Open to horses aged four years and older rated 51-70, the £7,500 contest provides a fitting finale to the afternoon’s racing.

Thirsk remains one of Yorkshire’s most respected flat racing venues, renowned for producing fair and competitive racing throughout the season. Wednesday’s programme reflects the strength of British flat racing, combining exciting juvenile contests, competitive handicaps and a quality feature sprint. From the opening novice races to the valuable Class 3 handicap, spectators can look forward to an enjoyable afternoon featuring horses at every stage of their racing careers.
