West Yorkshire venue Pontefract Racecourse will host a competitive seven-race Flat programme on Monday, 29 June, with racing scheduled from 2:30pm until 5:30pm. The afternoon fixture will feature an amateur riders’ handicap, a maiden, a valuable fillies’ novice contest and four additional handicaps. Prize money will range from £6,500 to £40,000, while race distances will vary from 5f 9y to 1m 4f 13y, ensuring a varied programme for horses across different divisions.
Proceedings will get underway at 2:30pm with the Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over 1m 2f 13y for £7,000. The opening contest has attracted eight runners, including Yermanthere, Shimmering Sands, Sandret, Tees George, Princess Niyla, Star Start and Ephron. The race will provide the amateur riders with an early opportunity to make an impression while opening the afternoon with a competitive middle-distance handicap.
The action will then move on to the Danny O’Neill Birthday “Confined” Maiden Stakes (Class 3) (GBB/GBB Plus Race) at 3:00pm over 1m 4f 13y for £12,000. The five-runner line-up will feature Alfred Wincham, Who’s The Goat, Camelot Champion, Knight Of Storms and Sea And Sun. As the only maiden on the programme, the contest will give several lightly raced horses the opportunity to secure a first career success over an extended distance.
Attention will subsequently turn to the feature race at 3:30pm when the Darley EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (Class 2) (GBB Race) will be run over 1m 14y for £40,000. Carnival Of Light, Stolen Kisses, Capichera, Sedeirah and Take A View will contest the afternoon’s most valuable event. The novice race will offer a significant opportunity for promising fillies to enhance their records in one of the strongest contests on the card.
Racing will continue with another competitive handicap at 4:00pm in the Bradford Handicap Stakes (Class 4) over 1m 14y with £10,000 on offer. Sir Paul Ramsey, Dovey Moon, Kaleido, Selection, Garden Oasis, Sunriseontheboyne and Jez Bomb are expected to line up in an evenly matched field. The race will add further quality to the middle section of the programme and is likely to prove one of the afternoon’s most competitive handicaps.
Sprint performers will then take centre stage at 4:30pm in the Pontefract Ladies Day Wednesday 5th August Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over 5f 9y, carrying prize money of £8,000. Betweenthesticks, Hover On The Wind, Queen Sana, Dream Deal, Knicks, Soca Star and Lucius Aurelius are set to contest the shortest race on the card. The sharp sprint distance will present a contrasting challenge to the earlier middle-distance events.
The penultimate contest will follow at 5:00pm with the Wilfred Underwood Memorial Handicap Stakes (Class 6) over 6f 6y for £6,500. Big Apple Jack, Ideal Guest, Great Success, Kyber Crystal, Full Gas, Superstorm and Lady Bouquet are among the declared runners. The six-furlong handicap will provide another closely contested race before the meeting reaches its conclusion.
The curtain will fall on the afternoon’s racing at 5:30pm with the Wayne Conway Memorial Handicap Stakes (Class 6) over 1m 14y, also worth £6,500. The nine-runner finale will include Anificas Beauty, Hostelry, Daring Leader, Nakatomi, Far Ahead, Shark Two One and Elettaria, completing a varied afternoon of Flat racing.
The seven-race programme will provide opportunities for both experienced handicappers and developing performers across a range of distances and classes. The £40,000 fillies’ novice contest will stand out as the highlight of the meeting, while the supporting races will ensure competitive action from the opening contest through to the concluding handicap.
