York Racecourse delivered another memorable afternoon of Flat racing on Saturday, June 27, with a seven-race programme featuring promising juveniles, competitive handicaps and a high-quality Group 3 contest. The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai-sponsored meeting attracted talented runners from leading stables, producing strong performances across every division and providing racegoers with an entertaining day on the Knavesmire.

The feature event of the afternoon, the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Criterion Stakes (Group 3) over seven furlongs, went the way of Qirat, partnered by Silvestre De Sousa. Producing a polished display, Qirat travelled comfortably throughout before quickening impressively in the closing stages to secure the prestigious contest. The victory marked another notable success for both horse and jockey in one of York’s established summer pattern races.

Earlier on the card, the opening Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Novice Stakes (Class 2) over six furlongs showcased emerging juvenile talent. Sirocco Sands (IRE), ridden by Robert Colgan, justified the confidence of connections with an assured performance. Travelling strongly from the outset, the youngster displayed both pace and professionalism to open the afternoon with an impressive victory that hinted at a bright future.

The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Mile Handicap (Class 3) produced another closely fought contest over seven furlongs and 209 yards. Cadarn (IRE), partnered by Shane Gray, timed the challenge to perfection. After settling comfortably in the early stages, Cadarn found another gear in the closing furlong to deny rivals and register a deserved handicap success in a competitive field.

Sprint specialists then took centre stage in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dash Handicap (Class 2) over the minimum five-furlong trip. Naana’s Shadow (IRE), expertly ridden by Oisin Murphy, showed exceptional early speed before holding off the late challengers. Murphy’s patient yet confident ride proved decisive as the pair combined to claim one of the afternoon’s most competitive handicaps.

The day’s feature race, the Group 3 Criterion Stakes, lived up to expectations. Qirat settled beautifully under Silvestre De Sousa before producing a decisive turn of foot inside the final furlong. The victory further enhanced the horse’s growing reputation and demonstrated the consistency that has become a hallmark of the partnership. Success in a Group contest at York represents a valuable addition to Qirat’s record and could pave the way for further pattern-race opportunities during the remainder of the season.

Staying performers then took over in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Handicap (Class 4) over one mile, five furlongs and 210 yards. My Ballyquinn, ridden by Mark Winn, produced a determined staying performance to emerge on top. Showing plenty of stamina throughout the extended trip, My Ballyquinn gradually wore down the opposition before pulling clear in the closing stages to earn a well-deserved success.

The sprint action returned in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Sprint Handicap (Class 4) over six furlongs. Hallo Spaceboy, once again giving Oisin Murphy another winner on the afternoon, produced a polished display. Positioned perfectly throughout the race, Hallo Spaceboy responded strongly when asked for maximum effort and finished with authority to complete an excellent performance.

The meeting concluded with the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap (Class 4) over one mile, two furlongs and 78 yards. Double Parked (IRE), partnered by Mr Thomas Easterby, delivered a determined effort to round off the card. Remaining well positioned throughout, Double Parked responded gamely in the closing stages to secure victory and provide the amateur rider with a memorable success at one of Britain’s premier racecourses.

Saturday’s meeting highlighted the depth and quality regularly associated with racing at York. From exciting juveniles making their mark to experienced campaigners excelling in handicaps and pattern company, the programme offered something for every racing enthusiast. The performances of Sirocco Sands, Cadarn, Naana’s Shadow, Qirat, My Ballyquinn, Hallo Spaceboy and Double Parked reflected the competitive nature of the afternoon and the calibre of horses competing at the venue.
