Newmarket Racecourse staged an entertaining six-race card on Thursday, June 25, with promising juveniles, experienced handicappers and talented fillies producing memorable performances on the historic July Course. The meeting featured competitive contests across a variety of distances, highlighted by the Listed Empress Fillies’ Stakes, where Havana Sprite delivered the standout performance of the afternoon.

The day began with The It’s Racing Staff Week EBF “Confined” Novice Stakes (Class 4) over six furlongs, a race restricted to lightly raced youngsters. Weekend Roar (IRE), ridden confidently by champion jockey Oisin Murphy, announced himself as a colt with considerable potential. Showing early pace, Weekend Roar travelled strongly before asserting his authority in the closing stages to secure an impressive debut success. The performance suggested that the youngster has the ability to progress into stronger company as the season unfolds.

The second race, The Hallgarten Fillies’ Novice Stakes (Class 4) over seven furlongs, showcased another exciting young prospect. Vanilla Skies, partnered by Cieren Fallon, produced a polished display from start to finish. Settled comfortably during the early stages, the filly quickened smartly inside the final furlong to move clear of her rivals. Her professional attitude and smooth acceleration indicated that she possesses both class and maturity despite her limited racing experience. The competitive Hallgarten Handicap Stakes (Class 4) over six furlongs brought together a closely matched field of seasoned sprinters. Sierra Sands (IRE) rewarded the confidence of his connections with a determined victory under Ryan Moore. The experienced rider timed his challenge to perfection, allowing Sierra Sands to settle before producing a decisive burst of speed approaching the closing stages. Despite pressure from several challengers, the gelding maintained his advantage to register another notable success, continuing his consistent run of form.

Attention then shifted to the feature contest of the afternoon, The Empress Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race) over six furlongs. The prestigious Listed event attracted an exciting field of talented juvenile fillies, and the race lived up to expectations.

Havana Sprite, partnered by Hector Crouch, delivered a performance worthy of the occasion. Travelling powerfully throughout, she displayed excellent balance and determination before pulling clear in the closing strides. Her victory demonstrated both speed and composure, qualities that could see her compete at an even higher level later in the campaign.

Runner-up Glorious Game, ridden by Oisin Murphy, also emerged with considerable credit after staying on strongly in the closing stages. While unable to overhaul the winner, the filly produced a highly encouraging display that suggested she too could make her mark in future Pattern company. The Listed contest proved to be one of the highlights of the meeting, underlining the depth of talent among Britain’s juvenile fillies.

The fifth race, The Hallgarten Partner of the Jockey Club Handicap Stakes (Class 3) over seven furlongs, produced another polished performance from Dark Tornado (IRE) under John Egan. Positioned ideally throughout the contest, Dark Tornado responded generously when asked to quicken approaching the final furlong. Holding off determined challengers, the gelding crossed the line with authority to secure a deserved victory. His consistency and professionalism were evident throughout the race, making this another satisfying success for his connections.

The meeting concluded with The Hallgarten Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (Class 4) over one mile. Darzah, guided by Cieren Fallon, capped an excellent afternoon for the jockey with his second winner of the meeting. Producing a well-judged ride, Fallon settled the filly comfortably before asking for her effort at the ideal moment. Darzah responded impressively, staying on strongly to take control in the closing stages and finish her race with confidence. The victory reflected both the filly’s stamina and the rider’s tactical awareness.

Thursday’s meeting highlighted the outstanding quality of young horses currently emerging through the British Flat racing programme. Several winners displayed significant promise, particularly Weekend Roar, Vanilla Skies and Havana Sprite, each of whom produced performances suggesting brighter opportunities lie ahead. Their victories added further excitement to an already competitive juvenile season.

Jockey honours were shared by Oisin Murphy and Cieren Fallon, who each partnered two winners during the afternoon. Murphy celebrated victories aboard Weekend Roar and finished second in the Listed feature aboard Glorious Game, while Fallon enjoyed success with Vanilla Skies and Darzah, once again demonstrating his growing reputation among Britain’s leading riders.

Ryan Moore and John Egan also enjoyed winner’s enclosure visits thanks to Sierra Sands and Dark Tornado respectively, completing a day that featured high-quality riding performances throughout the card.
