A remarkable chapter in Royal Ascot history was written on Thursday as Scandinavia produced a relentless late surge to deny defending champion Trawlerman in a gripping Gold Cup, handing trainer Aidan O’Brien his 100th winner at the meeting.

In front of a packed grandstand and a global audience, the staying showpiece developed into a compelling head-to-head battle between the younger Scandinavia and the experienced Trawlerman. The pair drew clear of their rivals turning for home and served up one of the most memorable finishes seen in the race in recent years.
Making his first appearance of the season, Trawlerman attempted to stretch the field from the home turn and looked set to retain his crown. Under Oisin Murphy, the brave stayer dug deep and refused to yield. However, Ryan Moore gradually coaxed Scandinavia into top gear and, only inside the final 50 yards, the four-year-old finally asserted his superiority.
At the line, Scandinavia had done enough to secure victory, with Trawlerman producing a gallant defence of his title. The pair finished nine lengths clear of Sweet William, who stayed on for third, while Irish St Leger winner Al Riffa filled fourth place in a high-class renewal of the Royal Ascot Gold Cup.
The victory extended an outstanding winning sequence for Scandinavia, a son of Justify, who has now won six races in succession since finishing fifth in last year’s Queen’s Vase. His impressive run includes victories in the Goodwood Cup and the St Leger, confirming his status among the elite stayers in training.
For O’Brien, the success carried extra significance. The Ballydoyle trainer reached a century of winners at Royal Ascot, a milestone few would have imagined possible when his first winner at the meeting arrived nearly three decades ago.
“This is a very special day for myself and everybody in Ballydoyle,” said O’Brien. “There are so many people involved to help a horse get this far.
“Ryan was incredible on Scandinavia. He looked after him throughout and got him into the perfect position for one final effort. The second horse is a great horse and incredibly brave. We always felt Scandinavia had courage and determination, and he showed that again.”
Reflecting on reaching 100 winners at the royal meeting, O’Brien admitted the achievement was difficult to comprehend.
“It’s something we would never dream about. Royal Ascot is so competitive and so difficult to win at. We take it one race at a time, so to reach this number is extraordinary.”
Moore was equally complimentary about his mount, believing the winning margin could have been greater.
“Scandinavia should probably have won more comfortably,” said the jockey. “I had to work harder than I wanted at one stage, but once he got there he found another effort. Trawlerman is a very brave horse and kept fighting. Scandinavia just keeps finding a way to win.”
The Royal Ascot Gold Cup was also a race filled with admiration for the runner-up. Co-trainer John Gosden paid tribute to Trawlerman after the veteran stayer produced a performance of immense courage despite a disrupted preparation.
“To me, it was the most exciting race to watch,” Gosden said. “It was a phenomenal finish between two magnificent stayers. He just got caught in the final strides.
“To produce a run like that as an eight-year-old, after limited preparation and no prep race, was extraordinary. You can only be enormously proud of him.”
Gosden revealed that Trawlerman’s build-up had been complicated by eye problems linked to sunlight sensitivity, which at one stage threatened his return to racing.
“There was a point when we wondered whether he would race again,” he explained. “He was in considerable discomfort earlier in the year. The vets have done a brilliant job, and these protective goggles have helped him enormously.”

While Trawlerman’s bravery won widespread admiration, the day ultimately belonged to Scandinavia and O’Brien. In a race that showcased the very best qualities of staying horses—endurance, courage and determination—the young star delivered when it mattered most, securing both a prestigious Gold Cup and a landmark moment in Royal Ascot history.
For racing fans, the Royal Ascot Gold Cup 2026 will be remembered not only for a thrilling finish but also for a milestone achievement that further cements O’Brien’s place among the sport’s greatest trainers.
