Brighton Racecourse hosted an entertaining six-race evening fixture on Tuesday, June 9, with a mixture of experienced campaigners and improving performers producing memorable displays on the Sussex coast. Several jockeys enjoyed notable success, with apprentice rider Donagh Murphy recording a memorable double, while veteran rider Tom Queally and champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa also visited the winner’s enclosure.

The meeting opened with the Apprentice Classified Stakes (Class 6) over six furlongs and 219 yards. The race produced a determined performance from Barnsnape Boy, who justified confidence with a strong finish under Donagh Murphy. The winner travelled comfortably throughout the contest before being produced at the right moment in the closing stages. Murphy timed his challenge perfectly, guiding Barnsnape Boy to the front inside the final furlong and maintaining the advantage all the way to the line.

The second contest, the Classified Stakes (Brighton Summer Sprint Series Qualifier) over five furlongs and 69 yards, saw Washington Heir continue his good form. Ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, the sprinter broke smartly and quickly established a prominent position.

Washington Heir travelled strongly throughout the race and responded impressively when asked for maximum effort in the final stages. De Sousa kept the horse focused as challengers emerged from behind, with the pair holding on to secure a well-deserved victory. The success added another Brighton triumph to De Sousa’s impressive career record and demonstrated Washington Heir’s effectiveness over the sharp sprint distance.

Race three featured the “Confined” Handicap Stakes (Class 5) over one mile and five yards for horses yet to win during the 2026 season. The contest produced one of the standout performances of the evening as Play Me delivered a convincing success under Donagh Murphy.

Settled just behind the leaders in the early stages, Play Me travelled smoothly before making steady progress around the home bend. Murphy showed patience before asking his mount for an effort approaching the final furlong. The response was immediate, with Play Me quickening clear of the field to register a comfortable victory. The win represented Murphy’s second success of the meeting and confirmed his excellent evening in the saddle.

The fourth race, a Class 6 Handicap over one mile, one furlong and 216 yards, went to Bohemian Breeze (IRE), ridden by experienced jockey Tom Queally. The Irish-bred runner produced a polished display, showing stamina and determination over the extended trip.

Bohemian Breeze was positioned prominently throughout and appeared comfortable with the pace set by the leaders. Turning for home, Queally gradually increased the pressure, and the horse responded willingly. In a competitive finish, Bohemian Breeze found extra reserves to secure victory and reward connections with a deserved success.

The result showcased Queally’s race-riding experience and highlighted the horse’s ability to handle Brighton’s unique undulating track. It was a performance that suggested further opportunities may await in similar handicap company during the summer months.

Attention then turned to the Class 6 Handicap Stakes over six furlongs and four yards. The race was won by Cape Toronada (FR) under William Carson, who delivered a confident ride from start to finish.

Cape Toronada broke well and maintained a prominent position throughout the contest. Carson ensured the horse remained in contention while tracking the leaders before launching a decisive challenge entering the final furlong. The French-bred runner responded strongly and pulled clear close home, producing one of the most authoritative victories of the evening.

The performance underlined Cape Toronada’s sprinting credentials and demonstrated the horse’s ability to finish strongly under pressure. Carson’s well-judged ride played a significant role in securing the victory, with the partnership proving too strong for their rivals in the closing stages.

The evening concluded with the Class 5 Handicap over five furlongs and 69 yards, where Rory Rocket provided a fitting finale. Partnered by Warren Fentiman, the speedy runner showed excellent early pace and never allowed rivals to gain a significant advantage.

Rory Rocket quickly established a prominent position and travelled smoothly throughout the contest. As the field entered the final furlong, several challengers attempted to close the gap, but Fentiman kept his mount balanced and focused. The horse responded gamely, maintaining momentum all the way to the winning post.

The victory capped a competitive and entertaining evening at Brighton, where sprint specialists and middle-distance performers alike delivered impressive displays. Donagh Murphy’s riding double stood out as one of the key stories of the meeting, while winners Washington Heir, Bohemian Breeze, Cape Toronada and Rory Rocket all produced performances that may lead to further success during the summer season.
