War Eternal’s late-career renaissance gathered further momentum at Eagle Farm on Saturday as the seasoned campaigner battled his way to victory in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap, adding another feature success to an already distinguished record.

The seven-year-old arrived in Brisbane in strong form and left with another notable prize after producing a determined finishing effort over 1500 metres. The result extended his winning streak in Queensland black-type company and carried his career earnings beyond the A$1 million mark.

Facing a quality field and tasked with carrying one of the heaviest weights in the race, War Eternal was asked a serious question in the closing stages. For a moment, it appeared he might have to settle for second.

After travelling comfortably just off the pace, the gelding moved into contention rounding the bend and struck the front inside the final 300 metres. His advantage was soon threatened when Sun God charged through along the rail, briefly gaining the upper hand as the pair fought out a compelling duel.

Rather than yielding, War Eternal responded under pressure and found another effort close to home, edging back in front in the final strides to secure a hard-earned victory.

The performance highlighted the qualities that have kept the son of Pierro competitive throughout a lengthy career. While many horses struggle to maintain their form beyond their younger years, War Eternal appears to be enjoying one of the most productive periods of his racing life.

Jockey Rachel King credited the gelding’s professionalism and willingness to compete, praising the way he settled into the race before responding when challenged.

The victory was another reward for trainer Bjorn Baker’s stable, which has seen the gelding develop into a reliable performer across multiple seasons. Stable representative Jim Clarke described War Eternal as a horse who has consistently delivered throughout his career and continues to repay the patience of connections.

War Eternal first made his mark as a three-year-old when competing in several major races against strong opposition. Years later, he remains a force in feature company, demonstrating the durability and toughness that are increasingly rare in modern racing.

Saturday’s success followed his Listed Bernborough Handicap win and confirmed his status as one of Queensland’s standout performers this season. With confidence high and form on his side, there may yet be more feature-race opportunities ahead before the campaign is over.
