Woodbine’s Queenston Stakes has often served as a proving ground for emerging Canadian talent, and Sunday’s edition may have revealed another horse capable of making a significant impact this season.
Highwaytothemoon stepped into the spotlight with a polished performance in the $125,000 feature, earning the first stakes victory of his career and continuing a steady rise that has gathered momentum since the start of the spring campaign.

For trainer Dale Desruisseaux, the success represented the latest reward for a patient approach with a horse who showed promise at two but was never rushed. After ending last season with a handful of respectable efforts in stakes company, Highwaytothemoon returned to Woodbine this year looking stronger, more mature and ready to take the next step.
That progression was evident throughout Sunday’s seven-furlong contest.
Sent straight to the lead under Rafael Hernandez, the gelding travelled comfortably at the head of affairs and never allowed his rivals to gain control of the race. While pressure arrived at various stages, particularly from Military Time in the closing furlong, the leader always appeared to have enough in reserve.
The final result reflected the authority of the display. Highwaytothemoon crossed the line first in 1:23.25, securing a breakthrough victory that had threatened to arrive for some time.
The race itself may not ultimately define his season, but it reinforced the impression that he belongs among the better Canadian-bred three-year-olds currently in training. Earlier this year he defeated older opposition on his seasonal return before producing a strong effort in the King Corrie Stakes, where he was narrowly denied after looking the likely winner.
Those performances hinted at untapped potential. The Queenston Stakes provided confirmation.
One of the more encouraging aspects of the victory was the professionalism shown during the race. Despite being involved in a brief pre-race incident at the starting gate, Highwaytothemoon quickly settled once the stalls opened and carried out his task with composure.
His latest success also extended a productive weekend for the Hernandez-Desruisseaux partnership, which celebrated stakes victories on consecutive days at Woodbine.
Whether the gelding eventually heads toward longer-distance objectives remains uncertain. Connections have indicated that his natural speed may make shorter assignments more suitable than some of the country’s classic races. Regardless of the route chosen, Sunday’s performance suggested there could be more important prizes ahead.
Owned by Centennial Farms Inc. and bred in Ontario by James Everatt, Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse, Highwaytothemoon now boasts three victories from six career starts and appears to be developing into a reliable performer at stakes level.
Behind the winner, heavily supported Military Time stayed on well for second place, while Brachetto completed the placings. Thundermaker finished fourth after racing prominently throughout.

The Queenston Stakes has a history of identifying talented Canadian-bred runners, and Highwaytothemoon now joins that list after a performance that combined speed, control and determination. If his recent improvement continues, this may be remembered as the afternoon when he truly announced his arrival on the national stage.
