Leicester Racecourse hosts an intriguing eight-race Flat programme on Monday, 8 June, featuring a mixture of juvenile maidens, novice contests, handicaps and classified races. The afternoon card offers opportunities for emerging talent and established performers alike, with the £10,000 Mesothelioma UK Handicap Stakes serving as the feature event.
The action gets underway at 1:30pm with the Heather Small Live @ Leicester Races Saturday 4th July Apprentice Handicap Stakes, a Class 6 contest over one mile and two furlongs for three-year-olds. Apprentice riders will be looking to make their mark in what promises to be a competitive opening event, with the extended distance placing an emphasis on both stamina and racecraft.
Attention then turns to the first division of the Go West Live @ Leicester Races Saturday 4th July Restricted Maiden Stakes at 2:00pm. The seven-furlong contest for two-year-olds offers £10,000 in prize money and features several youngsters seeking to improve on their debut efforts.
Among those with racecourse experience, Waiting For Archie shaped encouragingly when fifth on debut and could take a significant step forward. Parioca also displayed promise on her first outing and should benefit from that experience. Kach Above, Lord Ragnar, Farndale, and Pertinent all return after educational debuts and will be aiming to show progression.
The newcomers add further intrigue. Mrs Mole, representing Steph Hollinshead, makes her racecourse debut, while Eve Johnson Houghton introduces See Amna. Tim Easterby saddles debutante Wells Fargos Envoy, giving the trainer a second representative in the contest.
Division II follows at 2:30pm and appears equally competitive. Jazzy Bay brings the strongest established form into the race after showing ability in two previous starts. Mottaret produced a promising fourth-place effort on debut and could emerge as a leading contender with normal improvement.
Newcomers are strongly represented, with Hoosthat, partnered by Silvestre De Sousa for the William Muir and Chris Grassick team, attracting attention on debut. Mojito Madness, She Is Mighty, and Tiora Time also enter the race with unknown potential. Celtic Charioteer, Tiger In The Tree, and Jazzy Blue have racecourse experience and will be hoping to build on their initial outings.
The card continues at 3:00pm with the Racing Again This Saturday Evening 13th June Restricted Novice Stakes over six furlongs. Open to horses aged three to five years, the race offers an opportunity for lightly raced performers to continue their development. Novice races often provide clues for the remainder of the summer season and this contest looks no exception.
At 3:30pm, the focus shifts to sprinting with the DSK Environmental Handicap Stakes. Run over five furlongs for three-year-olds rated between 51 and 70, the Class 5 handicap should generate plenty of early pace. Leicester’s sprint course regularly produces competitive finishes, and this race looks likely to follow that pattern.
The Hugh James Classified Stakes follows at 4:00pm over seven furlongs. Restricted to horses rated 50 and below, the contest gives lower-rated runners a realistic opportunity to compete for valuable prize money and should produce a closely matched field.
The feature race arrives at 4:35pm with the Mesothelioma UK Handicap Stakes, a Class 4 contest over one mile and two furlongs worth £10,000. The race has attracted a strong field of experienced handicappers.
Top-rated Crystal Mariner heads the weights following a productive campaign that included two victories before a respectable seasonal reappearance effort. Jamie Osborne’s gelding remains a major player from a mark of 84.
Sharing the highest rating is course-and-distance winner Noble Horizon, whose proven Leicester form makes him a serious contender under Silvestre De Sousa. Hugo Palmer’s Seagolazo has been running consistently in stronger company and should be competitive once again.
Recent winner Zatsgood arrives in excellent form after scoring on his latest appearance and may have further improvement to come for the George Boughey stable. The Green Mile also comes here on the back of a victory and looks capable of following up if building on that performance.
Course-and-distance winner Percy’s Daydream has already won this season and brings solid credentials, while Double Red, Ted Le Saux, and unbeaten filly Nowshesdancing add further depth to a highly competitive contest. Veteran campaigner Woodstock City, runner-up on his latest outing, could prove dangerous from a lighter weight.
The meeting concludes at 5:10pm with the Smooth FM Ladies’ Day Saturday 4th July Book Now Classified Stakes over five furlongs. The Class 6 sprint offers a fitting finale to the afternoon and should provide plenty of excitement as runners battle for the final prize of the day.
With valuable juvenile maidens, competitive handicaps and a particularly strong feature race at 4:35pm, Leicester’s Monday fixture promises an entertaining afternoon of Flat racing. The juvenile divisions may reveal future stars, while the Mesothelioma UK Handicap Stakes looks set to provide the highest-quality contest on an engaging eight-race card.
