Thirsk Racecourse staged an entertaining seven-race programme on Friday, 5 June, with a mixture of maiden contests, sprint handicaps and middle-distance action producing a varied afternoon of racing. The Yorkshire venue witnessed several notable performances as horses of different ages and experience levels battled for honours across the card.

The opening contest at 1:40pm, the Hartshead DOS Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes (Division I), was run over seven furlongs and provided an opportunity for emerging talent to make a breakthrough. Eagle Bay, partnered by Paul Mulrennan, delivered a polished performance to land the Class 5 contest. Showing professionalism throughout the race, Eagle Bay travelled comfortably before asserting authority in the closing stages to secure maiden success. The victory marked a promising step forward and suggested there could be more to come from the youngster as the season progresses.

The second division of the same maiden event followed at 2:15pm, again over seven furlongs. Tip Foster, ridden by Joanna Mason, emerged victorious after a determined effort. The winner displayed good tactical speed and responded well when challenged, staying on strongly to claim the honours. The success represented an important milestone for connections and highlighted the horse’s potential to continue progressing through the ranks.

Sprint specialists then took centre stage in the 2:50pm Power Plastics ‘Big Day Out’ Handicap Stakes over the minimum five-furlong trip. Miss Rainbow, under Barry McHugh, produced a sharp display of speed to capture the Class 6 handicap. Breaking well and maintaining momentum throughout, Miss Rainbow demonstrated the pace required for the demanding sprint distance. The victory rewarded a consistent effort and showcased the mare’s ability to compete effectively in handicap company.

The 3:30pm Moody Construction Handicap Stakes over six furlongs produced another exciting finish. Annie Edson Taylor, partnered by P. J. McDonald, emerged on top after a well-judged ride. Settled into a favourable rhythm early, the winner was delivered at the right moment and responded gamely under pressure. The success added another notable result to the afternoon and highlighted the effectiveness of patient race tactics around the Thirsk circuit.

One of the feature contests of the day arrived at 4:10pm with the Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk Handicap Stakes over a testing mile and four furlongs. King of Berkshire, ridden by P. J. McDonald, proved strongest in the staying contest. The winner showed both stamina and determination, travelling smoothly before asserting superiority in the final stages. McDonald’s second victory of the afternoon underlined his excellent form and race-reading ability, while King of Berkshire demonstrated qualities that could make him competitive in similar events during the summer months.

The fillies took centre stage in the 4:45pm David Ritchie Is 50! Happy Birthday! Fillies’ Handicap Stakes over five furlongs. Military Girl, with Connor Beasley aboard, delivered an impressive performance to take the Class 5 event. Speed is often decisive over the minimum trip, and Military Girl possessed plenty of it, travelling strongly and finding enough in the closing stages to secure victory. The success added another noteworthy sprinting display to an afternoon packed with competitive action.

The concluding race at 5:20pm, the Next Meeting Tuesday 16th June Featuring Royal Ascot Handicap Stakes, brought the curtain down on the card with a six-furlong handicap. Daizen, ridden by Kaiya Fraser, produced a strong finishing effort to claim the final prize of the day. The winner showed admirable determination and consistency, battling on well to secure victory and provide connections with a satisfying end to proceedings.

Friday’s Thirsk meeting offered a balanced programme that highlighted the diversity of Flat racing. From promising maiden winners such as Eagle Bay and Tip Foster to experienced handicap performers including King of Berkshire, Military Girl and Daizen, the card delivered competitive racing across a range of distances and conditions.

Jockey P. J. McDonald enjoyed a particularly successful afternoon, recording a notable double aboard Annie Edson Taylor and King of Berkshire. His achievements were among the standout stories of the meeting and reinforced his reputation as one of the most dependable riders on the northern circuit.
