At Saratoga Race Course, where top-level racing draws its usual Saturday attention, trainer David Fawkes will be stationed with one of his leading hopes in the Jaipur (G1), a sharp 5 ½-furlong turf contest on a high-profile undercard. Even while absent from Gulfstream Park, his presence is strongly felt back in Florida through a trio of well-prepared runners lining up in graded and listed company.

Gulfstream Park Saturday stakes preview comes into focus with David Fawkes’ trio of runners set to contest key races across the card.

Fawkes travels north to saddle multiple graded-stakes winner Reef Runner in the Jaipur, but back in Florida, attention turns to Pure Class, Nickel C, and Nyfive—three horses stepping into meaningful assignments with competitive intent across different distances and surfaces.

Pure Class returns in the $125,000 Big Drama Handicap after rediscovering form with a commanding front-running victory over seven furlongs. Now back under the care of familiar connections following a claim-and-reclaim storyline, the gelding has quickly re-established himself as a force at this level. Jockey Edwin Gonzalez retains the ride, continuing a partnership that has already delivered multiple wins together.

“He ran a really big race last time, and he’s been training forwardly since,” Fawkes said, reflecting on the gelding’s recent improvement and suitability for the seven-furlong trip. “This looks like the right spot for him.”

The field includes seasoned rivals such as Concrete Glory and Rolando, setting up a competitive renewal where Pure Class is expected to be tested early but arrives in strong condition.

The Gulfstream Park Saturday stakes preview also features Nickel C in the $125,000 Not Surprising, a 1 1/16-mile Tapeta contest for three-year-olds. The Liam’s Map colt has been a consistent worker on the training track and has even shared preparation duties alongside stable star Reef Runner, matching strides in recent morning drills.

“He’s been working very well with Reef Runner,” Fawkes noted. “That kind of company has really helped sharpen him.”

Nickel C enters off a solid third-place effort in an optional-claiming race on turf and now steps into stakes company for the first time. He will again be partnered by Edwin Gonzalez, who rides him for the first time competitively.

In the opening stakes feature, Nyfive represents the stable in the $125,000 Martha Washington for three-year-old fillies over 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. A progressive daughter of Nyquist, she has built momentum with back-to-back victories since switching barns, including a decisive 7 ¼-length performance in starter allowance company.

“She’s really taken a step forward with each run,” Fawkes said. “Everything about her right now suggests she’s in a good place.”

With One Sweet Girl and Haute Diva among the main challengers, Nyfive faces a deeper test, but her recent progression suggests she will be competitive once again under Gonzalez.

For Fawkes, who famously trained Big Drama to Breeders’ Cup Sprint glory and Eclipse Award honours, the weekend represents a familiar balancing act between high-profile engagements and a strong home front presence.

The Gulfstream Park Saturday stakes preview underscores that depth, with each runner carrying a distinct storyline into their respective assignments while the trainer remains active on both coasts.

A successful day at Gulfstream would add another layer of satisfaction to an already busy weekend for the veteran horseman, whose influence stretches from Saratoga to South Florida.

Gulfstream Park Saturday stakes preview remains firmly centred on whether his trio can deliver on that promise when it matters most.

All three runners represent strong chances for Fawkes, with conditions and preparation suggesting competitive efforts across Gulfstream’s Saturday stakes card.
