With the Hong Kong trainers’ championship entering a decisive phase, Mark Newnham will look to narrow the gap on the leaders when he sends out a seven-horse team at Happy Valley on Wednesday, 3 June.
Happy Valley Race Preview.
The battle for the 2025/26 trainers’ title remains finely balanced, with only three victories separating the top three handlers. Caspar Fownes currently leads the standings on 58 wins, while Danny Shum sits second with 56 and Newnham is close behind on 55 after recording a weekend double. Francis Lui follows on 50 wins, David Hayes has 49 and John Size remains in contention on 46.
A significant part of Newnham’s hopes on Wednesday rests with Armor Golden Eagle, who returns just one week after securing his latest success. The four-year-old rises into Class 2 company for the Tai Tam Gap Handicap over 1800 metres following back-to-back victories in Class 3 races at Happy Valley.
The gelding has thrived since being switched to the city circuit, winning three of his last four starts there, including a convincing performance over 1650 metres on 27 May.
“He’s in really good form since we switched him to Happy Valley. He’s up to Class 2 but down in weight, from carrying 130 pounds to 119 pounds,” Newnham said.
“He’s been aided by two really good rides from Zac Purton from good barriers his last two starts.
“He’s a horse in form and, even though he’s going up in grade, I’d expect he’d run well.”
Karis Teetan takes over the ride aboard the 82-rated runner, who will start from barrier six against a strong field that includes Helene Feeling, Soleil Fighter, Packing Angel, Californiatotality, Awesome Fluke, Silvery Breeze, Beauty Alliance, Pocketing, Joy Of Spring and Liveandletlive.
Elsewhere on the card, Newnham will also saddle Setanta, Exceed The Wish, Same To You, Loving Vibes, Casa Rochester and Power Koepp.
Power Koepp contests the Class 3 Shouson Hill Handicap over 1200 metres as the six-time winner continues his search for a first victory in more than a year.
“He’s getting down to a rating where he can be competitive,” Newnham said.
Loving Vibes returns after finishing second over the same distance last week, while Exceed The Wish reappears in the Class 5 Mount Nicholson Handicap following a third-place effort seven days earlier.
The Happy Valley race meeting also presents opportunities for several of Newnham’s closest rivals in the championship standings.
David Hayes believes Soleil Fighter can produce another strong performance in the Tai Tam Gap Handicap. The consistent runner has regularly featured in the placings this season and will benefit from Hugh Bowman’s booking and barrier three.
“He’s won one race this season, but he’s been second and third many times. The 1800 metres is his maximum trip, but he will run very well,” Hayes said.
Hayes is also expecting a better showing from Pocketing, the Group 2-winning import from Australia, after an encouraging trial and recent trackwork.
“His trial was better. The tactics we adopted last run really didn’t suit him and he ran a poor race, but his trial and trackwork since then has been very good,” Hayes said.
Championship leader Caspar Fownes continues his pursuit of another landmark achievement. The veteran trainer needs just one more victory to equal his own record of 40 Happy Valley wins in a single season, established in 2009/10.
Fownes will be represented by Family Fortune, Captain Link, The Heir, Dancing Classics and Joy Of Spring as he seeks to strengthen his position at the top of the trainers’ table.
Meanwhile, Frankie Lor is hoping Symbol Of Strength can bounce back in the Shouson Hill Handicap after an unsuccessful attempt on dirt last time out.
“We tried him on the dirt last start, but he wasn’t very good. He’s much better at Happy Valley, so I’ve brought him back here,” Lor said.
This Happy Valley race preview highlights a meeting that could have major implications for the trainers’ championship as the season approaches its final stretch. With Armor Golden Eagle aiming to continue his rise through the grades and several title contenders represented across the programme, Wednesday’s fixture carries significance well beyond the individual races.
The nine-race card, the 77th meeting of the season from a scheduled 88, begins at 6.40pm with the Class 5 Mount Butler Handicap over 1650 metres.
